  • Respectful farewell

Some of you may have heard I am changing careers into financial planning and will be working for one of the largest national financial planning firms within 100-120 days. The first step in this process is taking the series 7, and I am going to be taking that test within next 90 days. Once I sit for the test and get hired, I will no longer be able to post to public internet forums.

I will not be allowed to post to internet discussions regarding investing or similar as that violates some portions of the license and SEC regulations regarding compliance. If you have questions which I am allowed to answer, I will do so thru private messages only, and only if it does not violate various compliance issues I am still learning about the industry.

I am posting this now, so if anyone wants my contact info, you can PM me on the boards and get it.
My account here will remain active, but I will not use it after I am licensed. If you email me from the forum, it will make its way to me. Depending on contents of email, I may or may not be able to respond directly. I know 2 posters already requested the info, and I think they got my personal email and info.

3 years later I should have my CFP as well, but that is a whole different test.

The preferred way for me to be contacted is linked in, that way I know the information for person which is contacting me (including name) as a way to cover my tail. But if you prefer to remain anonymous, my signature says it all, and you get what you pay for LOL.

It has been my pleasure spending time on the boards and interacting with you over the years (how long has it been?). Learned a lot, helped a few people out and got thru a few rough patches of life. I wish you all the best, and if you want information to contact me, send me a PM and I will send you my linked in profile and my yahoo email address.

Sorry to hear we'll be losing your opinions on here, your advice has been really helpful for alot of us. Good luck with your series 7 and CFP later on, you'll do great. Take care.

Jim, I'm happy to hear about the career change. I know it is something you have wanted to do for a long time. I'm very sorry to learn that it means we will lose your valuable presence here on the board. Your posts have helped many, many people, including me quite a few times, work through the financial complexities of life. You will definitely be missed. Best of luck to you.

Hope you don't mind but I'm going to move this thread over to General Discussion as I think a lot more people who would like to say goodbye will see it over there.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Wow, I didn't know there was this restriction... hmm... so this means the only people posting financial advice are either breaking the law (not likely), or have no formal financial training at all... (much more likely)...

Looking at the average quality of the posters on the yahoo finance messageboards, it all starts to make sense...

Good luck in your new career,
        g

Wow, this is a real loss for this forum. I always respect your opinions...always. I'm sorry to see you go but it's good to see that you will be doing what you love and are obviously very good at.

Sorry... maybe I'm the only one that doesn't get this- why do you have to stop posting because of a series 7? Do you have any backup from the SEC that covers restrictions on giving free advice?

It's a shame to see you go. It'd be an even bigger shame to see you leave if you didn't have to.

Thanks for all the advice you shared Jim! Sorry to see you go... You were a great help to many. (I just realized that I'm making it sound like you died, lol!) Farewell!

Jim, sorry to learn your new career restricts you from offering your well reasoned, well thought-out succinct advice/observations at this site. You will be missed. I wish you every success in your new career with the national planning firm. Let us know when you become a CFP so that we can offer further congratulations, it's a tough course but I'm sure you'll enjoy new challenges.

Jim, good luck on your new career. Hopefully I'll be following you soon in such an endeavor. I've enjoyed your posts and I'm sure many others have also. Now who's going to do all the mathematical stuff? You were quite a help to the forum and you'll be missed. Good luck to you and your family.

If you work for a broker dealer, anything which is posted could be construed as advertising, and therefore advertising must be approved by the Broker dealer and SEC prior to posting. There are finer points on this in the series 7 I am preparing for, but in my 3 interviews, the point about compliance was made VERY clear.

The firm has a compliance department- any emails I would send (mass emails) for example would need to be approved prior to sending. If I create a blog (I will) any blog post needs to be approved prior to posting. Posting to forums like this could be interpreted as a blog or similar advertisement, or could be construed by some as advice. Giving advice without getting due diligence info would get my license suspended. Not worth taking that chance. They are even telling me I am restricted as to what I can do on facebook and linked in as well.

I will have a website up eventually, and part of that will be a blog, but I need to wait until I am licensed to create that.

jIM, congratulations and best of luck to your career change. I will say, having only been on this forum for a few months, I've always respected and enjoyed reading your responses the most, since they're so thorough with the numbers to back them up. Answering our questions with direct answers and explaining them so well is always a comfort to us noobs. Thanks again!

Ah, Jimmyboy --- we knew him so well! Any one else feel like they are at a wake?

Nah, really Jim, the forum will feel your absence for sure. Gone will be those detailed answers with alternatives, and the math already done! In a world where some folks can't figure out how much a loaf of bread will be if there's a 20% off sale, many people really lucked out to have your answers and examples with the math done. Thanks so much for the time and patience you've put in. Good luck.
