  • Tonight I went through my desk and organized and decluttered stationery and greeting cards. I'm very proud of organizing them by type, finding all those stray envelopes and finishing the job!

    • I keep my cards elsewhere but I went over min this am. Don't have ANYTHING on hand that I need for Aug & Sept (1 bday & 2 anniversaries).

      • I decided to pare down the number of decorative items above my kitchen cabinets. I pulled all the items down, including floral baskets. I took the items outside and hosed everything down, including the baskets and florals. Sparkly clean. I put only four items back up and it looks refreshing to have less. I'm deciding what to do with the other items, some will likely get donated, but others incorporated into the rest of the home.

        • Basement and Garden

I decluttered some weeds this morning, but my major accomplishment was in the basement. Two big bags of misc junk went out. More to come soon!

          • If you're clearing out expired prescriptions and OTC medications, check with your pharmacist as most have a safe discard system.

            • I know CVS takes them. My town health dept also takes the expired Rx and OTC.

                • I sorted through unworn summer clothes last night while we were watching a movie. Two bags went to a freecycler this morning--with another one enroute. This is purge week for me since I have a charity shop pickup scheduled!

This is always a great idea. A known scheduled pick up date can be a great motivator.

I gave this tip to my sister awhile back concerning some furniture they want to donate...but it has yet to be done. It's a simple call. I think she wants to have as much as possible ready to go. But really the big stuff can be one pickup and the other stuff, once gathered, can be another. Don't let perfection get in the way of decluttering!!

                    • Many of the larger charity organizations like Goodwill [GW] Salvation Army [SA] follow a schedule, you can easily learn when their truck will be in your area/community. If you purge to that target date, a brief phone call will get a truck to your door. You can leave your donation tagged with the charity name outside on the driveway/stairs. By giving items you no longer use or love, you are blessing someone else with your generosity. Another person will love, use and enjoy your discards. The added benefit is a clearer closet/cupboard/shelf
/drawer, less stuff to look after and likely able to locate the items you seek.

                      • I've got an old desk and two huge bags out for Purple Heart. Yesterday I also gave away a book, listed more things on ebay, and freecycled a box of earrings!

                        • If you have school age youngsters, it's time to get ready for the new school term. What still fits...what's outgrown? What needs replacement? Where will the money come from? If there is a market for used clothes in your community, have a look on Craig's List or Kijijji + name of your community for this local e-bay site as well as e-bay. In these challenging days it's a good idea to cut corners where we can for the broad category of school supplies.

Anything ripped, stained, elasticity expired needs to be trashed. Items outgrown but in good condition might be sold or donated to your preferred charity for a USA tax deduction. Does your church offer a clothes exchange? If you have teen daughter, would they consider a clothes exchange party with their friends? The ladies in our condo complex organize an exchange in early November...why not teens who are the most fickle of fashionistas?

If you work in an office, ask HR if they will consider clearing excess inventory of paper/pencil/pen/marker/binder supplies for donations to military or charity outlets.

                          • Today we took several bags of old clothes to the Salvation Army waste disposal bins at ASDA.
Unfortunately we did not have any bags left for the shopping so our good deed was cancelled out.

                            • Purple Heart (grr) didn't pick up the desk and dropped two things from the clothes bag on the sidewalk. So I've started a new pile and found a freecycle home for the desk. It's gone!

                              • I just went thru a box of knit shirts my late DH had packed up.

17 are going into the donate pile and 10 I will give to my Dad's caretaker.
