Is there typically any charge for receiving a long distance call on your cell phone? My daughter has a friend who is currently doing a semester in Israel and the friend would like to call her. My daughter just wants to be sure it won't generate a charge on our end.

Steve, I've had to look at this as well, since my family has been living overseas for a while... You have an iPhone, so I assume you're with AT&T? So did I. Basic answer: I don't think so. As long as the overseas friend calls your daughter (stateside), you won't get any additional charge (or at least, I never did). It's only if you're the one who calls to overseas, then you'll get charged. Also, if you are the one currently overseas, then you get charged for both incoming and outgoing calls.

It seems to me that this is something that may differ from carrier to carrier. I would just call your cell service provider and ask. I received a text message from my Aunt who was overseas at the time. I was charged the usual $0.20 or $0.25 for the text since we don't have text messages on our plan, but not anything beyond that. I'm with Verizon.

Just to be clear, we are in the US and have AT&T. The caller is in Israel and will be placing the call to us. I know she will have to pay. I want to know if we will have to pay to receive her call. Of course, I could have her call the house phone instead of the cell phone because I know for sure there is no charge then.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

yea, you should be good to have her call your daughter's phone. I've never seen any charges for receiving overseas calls while stateside. You'll be charged standard minutes, but no fees/charges more than usual. But yea, if nothing else, the home phone works as well. (home phone? land line?? what's that?!? lol)

No, you won't be charged anything extra. I have friends in Korea who call all the time from their phones, I'm also with AT&T too. I know in that country, the majority of cell phone plans include calls to US as free also. So for the contact in Israel, it would be under their plan for additional costs. Other great options are Skype, and international phone cards."I'd buy that for a dollar!"

just use skype. Considering most net connections are pretty decent nowadays, should'nt really be much of a prob. Voice is clear and best of all, it is free. The only hitch if you are calling up a mobiel phone or home phone using skype, it is chargeable
