A little off topic - but I think you are paying too much for insurance! I am from MN and have a $1,000 deductible with pretty comprehensive coverage on a $400K house for about $1,200 a year. Live in TC suburb. I suppose if you are in Mpls that may drive up your costs some, but you may want to shop around.Originally posted by TheStreetCeo View Post6k, Ouch! My house is valued just under that and my taxes are $3200.00. Insurance is $1800 too which I think is crazy
Just my two cents.
Oh - yes - on topic - mortgage is $2,300 (PITI). Minneapolis/St. Paul suburb.

I think it's really hard to say. When we owned a condo in an expensive area (we didn't own the roof or walls?), our insurance was the same as for a much larger home where we live now. Huge regional differences.Originally posted by dfeucht View PostA little off topic - but I think you are paying too much for insurance! Montreal, Canada.
655$ mortgage + 4200$ taxes + about 700$ insurance. That's a bit over 4% of our household gross. Bought two years ago, a bit over 11 years of scheduled payments to go. We put in a large cash down as we are more debt averse than the interest rate should have dictated. Love the incoming cash flow flexibility it procures thought.

My very first mortgage payment was $97 a month. Our 2nd house was $125 a month. We paid the house off early and had no house payment on house number #3. When we built house number #4, I did get a mortgage of $50,000 and paid $500 a month on that house. I couldn't stand those big payments, so I paid off the mortgage in 2 years and have not had a mortgage since then.
I live in Northern Georgia (in the mountains) and my taxes are $2200 a year; insurance is $1100 per year.
We have about 3200 square feet plus an additional two car garage with bathroom and eff. apartment also. (heated)
