  • There might be 120 weeks of unemployment now?

holy moly. my dh was laid off for a while but took a paycut to get back to work way before it ran out. I can't believe some might get 120 weeks? wow. I am sure there are pros and cons but wondering if this is true.

It is insane and we've discussed it here quite a bit. Others disagree but I'm of the opinion that extending unemployment payments delays people returning to work because it removes the incentive and urgency to find work.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

      Yeah,

isn't it terrrible that all those thousands, if not millions of jobs are going unfilled because all these lazy bastards want to sit at home getting rich off unemployment.

besides, I've got mine, so screw everybody else!

I know of an entire family that has done nothing for over a year but collect unemployment. The crazy thing is the husband was a successful financial analyst and made a grip but when he got laid off he said the hell with it.

I think it's great for people who really need it, but like all government aid it's a double edged sword. I personally know several people who abuse the system, have no desire to find a new job, etc, and this will enable them more.

Unemployment is the new welfare. IMO, this recession will last as long or longer than the Great Depression. Funny how people lived through the depression without it , but without unemployment today, many claim there would people dying in the streets.

I actually heard Obama say that if people do not keep recieving benefits, they would have to turn to family members for help. What has happened to this country?

                Sigh...

For those of you slow on the uptake, you can google "sarcasm".

You'll find some in both sentances.

LOL wincrasher.....I can always count on you to throw a little humor on the subject.

We had a guy here where I work (government contractor) had his contract expire, so we offered to put him under my current contract and keep him busy. He turned down the offer so he could sit at home and draw unemployment. I just don't get some people.

Thanks. I'm here all week! Tip your waitresses and try the veal - it's terrific.

I guess if you are making minimum wage or thereabouts, UI is probably not bad money to you.
Otherwise, there must be some crazyness in play.

Don't forget that a lot of people stay on unemployment and work under the table for cash at the same time. A lot of my patients do it - and freely admit to it.

                        Let them eat cake!!

                        Kidding, kidding!!

Sure as with any kind of safety net there are a few who will take advantage, but I believe the majority are hard working folks who want to work and are victims of the economy.

We have 10% unemployment and the jobs are just not there. Too many people and not enough jobs.

I say we give them the benefit of the doubt.

I saw a help wanted sign today, first in a long time! It was in a snow cone hut. Would a person lose their unemployment insurance if they take a 4 hour a day, 7 days a week job?

Depends on the state and on how much it pays per hour. In Kansas, you can earn up to $100 a week without impacting the unemployment benefits, and after that it would decrease the amount you would get dollar per dollar.

I called to apply for unemployment for the first time today and got a message saying they couldn't take my call because of the high call volume and to try back some other time (I don't see traffic letting up at all, anytime soon...). So, I then tried to file online and it said my application couldn't be processed and that I'd have to call to do it. wtf...
