Personally I lived in less than 300 sq ft for a couple in a metro area, not in a great area for CHEAP rent NO kitchen, only a mini fridge and hot plate.
So I would say my DH and I made sacrifices while renting. One could argue that we made as much a sacrifice as "building or buying in a terrible area" because the area we lived in was SMALL and TINY.
My DH would sit on the toilet to have privacy from me because it was sooo small. It really was for one person. And it cost us $800/month.
