I would work mornings, be a mom in the afternoons and write in the evenings, that is the plan.
    Hi Radius,

I am curious about how many hours do you spend on being a freelance writer?

it would be nice if you loved something that you invested 40 hours per week

I'm sorry. I really dont' know what it means to "love" my job. And, I don't ever recall anyone in my parent's generation waxing about how they "loved" their job. Seems like a new concept to me that we now think work must fulfill some certain deep seated need or else we must be unhappy.
I don't love a "thing". If I lost my job today, I will find another one tomorrow. I can enjoy doing most any kind of job if necessary.
Love is for my family and friends. Jobs come and go throughout one's life. I don't feel that I must declare my love for my job from the rooftop.
THe implication is that if you don't say you "love your job" then somehow you must be less than dedicated which is the furthest thing from the truth.

        1. hate it
        2. I don't get all my hours eventhough I have a full time position. Work conditions sucks. Bad for the back and feet. I could go on...
        3. At this point I don't care for another career because all I want to do is spend more time withthe kids. Therefore once I get my dept paid off I will only work casual hours somewhere reasonable.
        4. Yes I think it's affecting my familly because I only see my kids for about 1 hour 4 days a week. And also I don't have the energy to do what I would want to do with them.

I love my job...I am a substitute teacher and starting my 7th year, which means I am top of the list for most of the teachers and keep busy. But the best thing is working with the kids (K-5th). Seriously thinking about going back to school (would take 2 yrs) and getting a full teaching cert. I know it is hard finding a full position, but I would like to at least have that option.

My secondary job is doing taxes for a tax prep company during tax season. I do like working with the clients and the numbers/math I honestly enjoy.

I am lucky that DH has a good solid job (fairly secure) that pays well, so my paychecks are not budgeted in as I never know how much I will get from month to month. We will apply all of the extra this year towards CC debit and see how quickly we can snowball it.

No matter what job you have there is always office politics. I haven't been in a work environment that doesn't have it yet. Although with subbing, I can be a fly on the wall and not get involved in things...very nice upside.

Right now only 1-2 hours a day, erg, at night, I am just starting. I am defining my niche and building my marketing strategy.

According to statistics I might not do any money on the first 2 years.
I will need to submit a decent amount of content for free while I make myself known.

So for now I still work from 8-5 on my regular job as a business analyst and my freelance career launching tasks happen after 9pm when my baby is sleep.

Some weeks I am able to dedicate 4 hours during the weekend.

The plan , however is something like this for the future:

            The week:
            8-12 - day job
            12-5 mommy time
6-10 freelancing, baby would be with his dad...also by then he will be about 4 so he should more independent

            The weekend
4-6 hours of more writing time and other admin tasks inherent to freelance business.

I won't be able to reduce my day job hours until I start producing some side money.

I recently am taking a break to raise my new baby. I have worked in many capacities as a teacher to young children(have a dress). I like kids, but not teaching so much(it's all about behavior, parents, standardized tests etc)

I have worked as a medical assistant. I disliked the "order and do as many tests as possible on patients" pushiness by the manager or the times hwen I was literally expected to be in TWO EXAM ROOMS AT THE SAME TIME(being on duty with a schedule of pts to do testing on and then being told to go do something on another pt that cam eup and getting scolded for getting behind in my other duties) (healthcare is a profit by numbers game) but I loves talking to the patients.

FRankly, I like working p/t. It is the best of both worlds but the benefits are horrible (none).

                1. Do you either like, dislike or hate your job?

                I really enjoy my job.

                2. What are the reasons why you dislike like or hate your job? Please share stories.

Petty BS really gets to me. Double standards, favoritism, lack of appreciation.

                3. Would you prefer to pursue another career? If so, what is your plan?

I would not pursue another career. I have spent a long time working to walk on the road I am currently on.

                4. Is job satisfaction or dissatisfaction negatively affecting your family?

No family. I can work as long as I want and no one knows any different.

I commend you for doing this. Most people would refuse this opportunity because they would fail to generate an income for 2 years.

                    1. I really like my job.
                    2. I'm a sales engineer and work for home 2/3 of the time and am on the road the other 1/3. There is nothing I hate more than traffic, so the lack of commute is a huge contributor to my quality of life. I also really like the people I work with. The only real negative of the job is that I get paid significantly less than I could make elsewhere, but the positives make up for this.
                    3. I'm still young at can't imagine doing the same thing my entire life, so at some point I would like to change careers. Not sure what that would be though.
                    4. Not yet, but is is possible that it could negatively affect my family when I start having children due to the travel.

I know! this is why it is difficult to stay motivated. But each morning when I have to leave my little one for 10 hours I get motivated again.

As a freelancer they say your opportunities are endless. I am looking into publishing my own ebooks, having some teleseminars and the such.

I would say I love my job. It is a perfect fit for my personality, and pays enough to cover our needs.

I like the having an unpredictable schedule. Some days I work a mere two hours, others are more than 15. This makes it hard to plan things day to day, but I love the variation as it is almost never the same day twice.

Currently I am going back to college, but I'm not certain if I will pursue another career. On the one hand I it would be nice to have a vocation that has a greater impact on society as a whole, however it seems unlikely that I could find another career that affords me as much freedom as I currently enjoy.

To be honest my job satisfaction does sometimes causes tension at home. This is mostly due to a perceived inequity in workload. I work fulltime and handle my half of the chores and go to school part time (though I don’t count this since 90% of the class work gets done at work). Currently, my wife does not work however she is going to school fulltime and handles roughly half the household chores. Sounds about fair right? However, I have a peculiar benefit from my job that distorts this. There are about 4-8 working days a month that I essentially get paid to stay home. These don't count as vacation or sick days and I’m paid a full days wage ... sometimes this happens due to circumstances outside either my companies or mine control such as scheduling and cancellations ... other times they just don't want me to get burnt out from working long hours. Anyway DW feels that since I'm not working I should spend the time doing more of the household chores, after all I have eight free hours she points out. I feel that since I am doing my share of the chores I should be able to enjoy these days relaxing or attending to my hobbies. Ha, so that’s my little home drama.

                          Interesting post and responses.

                          1. Do you either like, dislike or hate your job?
Mostly like, sometimes love, occasionally dislike or even hate.

                          2. What are the reasons why you dislike like or hate your job? Please share stories.
I like the work most of the time, though inefficiencies in process that cause me to repeat work drive me nuts. I love when I really transform a piece (I'm an editor/proofreader) or get to write something pretty interesting (sometimes I pick up some writing work). I don't get a ton of feedback, but once in awhile I get some really positive comments and praise and that makes me feel like I'm making a difference.

I love my commute: 10 to 20 minutes by bus! Schedule is fairly flexible in that I can come in anytime from 8:30 to 9:30, leave at 5:30, take an hour lunch, and come in late or leave early any time I need to for medical or other reasons, without getting pay docked. I have a quiet out-of-the-way cubicle so on slow days, I can take care of personal tasks like budgeting and blogging and taxes.

The only things I hate are really not my job's fault but the economy: one raise in three years, healthcare benefits covering less and less (which has more than erased the raise in terms of take-home pay), multiple rounds of layoffs, and change in benefits that doesn't allow carryover of sick time or PTO.

                          3. Would you prefer to pursue another career? If so, what is your plan?
No plan, but of course I do dream about doing various things such as open a restaurant, be a financial consultant for people in trouble, work for a book publishing company, try to write a novel, etc. I lack either know-how, courage or motivation to actually go after one of these. In general I prefer the relative security of a paycheck at a company.

                          4. Is job satisfaction or dissatisfaction negatively affecting your family?
Neutral. Occasionally I'll work overtime or bring work home, but it's really really rare. Especially since I found out how much harder we Americans work than Europeans, I try to make sure my job doesn't run over into my personal life. I'm really hoping I can explore a 4-day workweek or shorter hours once my baby is born, but I haven't broached that subject with HR just yet.

I feel I can write 2 articles per day, 3 days a week. So, 6 articles a week?

Right now I feel I can write early in the morning before the day starts and then at night. (I am a day person though, so maybe lunch time would be more productive) With a full time job, packing and a teething baby that is as much as I feel I can do for now.
