What do you regret buying?

My dogs. LOL. No idea they were so expensive. Impulse on the first dog but definitely worth it.

If anyone ever asks pets are expensive.

Mice for my daughter. They sink something terrible even though we change the cage twice a week. I buy expensive bedding, so we can keep from changing it more often.

And..maybe the piano I bought used off craigslist last year. I just sold it for the same amount. But I'm out the fee I paid to have it delivered here.

Bought a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado convertible 4 years ago from someone off of Ebay. I have no experience working on cars, a 1 car garage that can barley fit a 22 1/2 foot long convertible boat, no tools, school, work, and not a lot of time from those, and on top of it all not a lot of disposable income.

I had to rely on my friends and other favors to get the car to drive-able condition. $3000 for the car, it broke down on the drive home from NY, NY to Detroit, MI. As of now over 4 years later and $7000 invested I would happily take $4k for it. It is driveable but still needs about $1500 worth of work before it would be attractive enough to sell to someone who wanted it.

Long story short, Never bite off more than you can chew, and always remember to have room for the things you buy incase you dont want to work on them for periods of time.

I am very fortunate because ever since this happened I have never bought a giant impulse buy like that, and I am soo lucky to have learned such as lesson at 22. This is by far the biggest mistake of my life, but at the same time I value that such a mistake has only costed me 10,000 I could think of a LOT of worse things to have done that could have costed much much more.

My pickup. I didn't have to buy new, but I did.
My table and chairs. Brand new. They are nice, but totally not necessary
My big screen tv and other entertainment equipment.

At the time I was single and making lots of money. Now, married, and well, not much disposable income. I'm still paying on the pickup (done in October! yippee. After a 6 year loan <---what was I thinking?) and the table and chairs (0% interest until 2010)

I regret starting up a saltwater aquarium hobby (very expensive and time consuming), especially now that I want to sell all the equipment and get out of it. I also regret my furniture store purchases. I should have just gone to a consignment store instead of being impatient (bought so my inlaws wouldn't have to sit on the floor for Thanksgiving dinner).

But as I didn't regret these purchases until this year and I had both of them for many years before, I am not sure these are good examples. They just don't work in my new homes and I hate the hassle of trying to get rid of them.

I almost did. They had a free promotion to clean your rugs with no other obligations(right!). They clean your rug and give you a sales pitch from hell.I spent an hour getting rid of them; Nope, didn't spend a dime here. I'm sure they've gotten over on many people.

i'm probably going to sound a little odd, or at least a little different in my regret:
i regret buying my car. sounds normal right? well...

i regret NOT borrowing $9000 to buy a car, and instead borrowing and buying a $6500 car.

why?

because two years later, i know i would have been content with the 9k car i was looking at, and not looking at getting a new one so soon as now (because the $6.5k one is on the edge of not being able to be resold).

A fun thread - mostly regret buying SO MANY toys and clothes for my kids - we've been downscaling these much to my relief. Kids do not need a thousand toys and if their clothes can't fit in two full closets - there's a clue there;-)

Can you describe the sales pitch. It seems like it would be very interesting to read.

This was really a good one. It was several years ago so I've forgotten a few details. When I bought my home I was already aware that the previous owner had cats and apparently didn't teach them about litter boxes. Shortly after moving in I got a flyer in the mail or it may have been a phone call from Kirby. The offer was to come in and clean all carpets for free and to "learn" about the company's products. I knew from the get-go that a sales pitch would follow but I was single and their was no lady of the house to throw their pitch at and I'm pretty good at saying no.

I took them up on it. A few days later they came out and, as claimed, they very nicely cleaned it all. This is when the fun part began. They showed me many parts of their all-in-one, vacumn, sweeper, miracle working, stainless steel must have turbo powered carpet machine. It had a see thru glass to see the dirt you picked up and was pretty impressive, I have to admit.

After the demonstration they said they could let me have it for $2100 I, of course, balked at that immediately. The price went down over the course of the hour of haggling to I believe about $900. I couldn't believe I had "talked" them down that much by just repeatedly saying no. It sort of became a game for me with no intention of making a purchase. I had finally had enough and insisted that we weren't going to make a deal. The following week I went to K-Mart and bought what I needed for probably $200. Amazing how much money you can save with the word "no".
