  • New luxury item in our house

We just ordered something totally frivolous. Well, maybe not totally frivolous since it does have a practical use, but definitely a luxury item. We ordered a Keurig coffee maker. My wife is the only one in the house who drinks coffee, so it will mainly be used by her. She currently uses a Black and Decker one-cup coffee maker. The Keurig is much more convenient and doesn't require the daily cleaning that ours does.

The other good thing about it is it can also make tea and hot chocolate, which my daughter and I both drink. So all 3 of us will get to use it.

You do have to buy the coffee/tea/chocolate pods but on Amazon they run about $.48 each which isn't a bad price for a cup of coffee. Plus, I do a lot of surveys that pay me in Amazon credit and we can never figure out what to buy with all of the credits. I had over $600 in credit before placing today's order. I get a minimum of $50/month in credit. That is more than enough to keep her supplied with coffee.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Relax and enjoy your new practical toy. If you were drowning in debt it might be a bad choice as you know but I think you're ok. Again, enjoy.

I've had one of these machines for about 9 months and love it!

Neat thing about it is it will fill my travel mug quickly before I head out the door in the morning.

Also, you never have to clean out the machine - I use only filtered water in it.

One of the hospitals I work at has one of these in their breakroom. It is very simple to use and the coffee/tea always comes out great. My wife and I bought one a few months ago and we love it. Enjoy Steve!

I have one of these at the office... It's very convenient. However, I only for use it for tea. I have tried at least 5 different pods for the coffee and don't like any of them. I drink my coffee black, so it's important that the taste stands on its own. If you like tea or flavored coffee it's a handy appliance, but I wouldn't recommend it for the black-coffee drinker. I still stop at Starbucks each morning before coming in to the office, and use our standard coffee maker if I want additional cups throughout the morning.

I have a senseo because my husband only drinks coffee, I do tea occasionally. And we do the pods as well. He has the keurig at work, but he preferred the taste of the senseo.

You can buy a reusable filter cup that lets you put in your own coffee to use in the Keurig. You might want to go that route.

Hooray Steve, hope you all enjoy the small luxury.

boosami: I discovered that Costo's Kirkland Brand, [green colored bag] coffee beans are actually Starbucks but several bucks cheaper. Grind beans weekly and it doesn't seem to matter which coffee machine I use...comes out GRReat! Since using disposable coffee cups is no longer politically correct we've been using our Travel Mugs and discovered savings of $60. ea. per month and bonus of no waiting in line-ups.

Congratulations. Now that you are all sophisticated and everything, you now have to have an opinion on drip, percolate, balancing siphon or french press it.

I have always wanted to have the beat up percolator that my late grandmother had and brought out and plugged in hte wall on Holidays. I remember watching the coffee splash up in that little glass top thingie as a kid and thinking it was like fancy or something.

I admit I have no idea how percolated coffee tastes comparatively though (I am becoming more a coffee drinker lately - seems to enhance my runs).

Scanner, I don't drink coffee at all, so I couldn't care less which method she uses. I think like most people, she likes the quickness of drip coffee. Who has time to percolate anymore? She also likes the fact that the Keurig doesn't need daily cleaning like the drip coffee maker she uses now.

I remember percolators from many years ago and yes there is something special about the sight of the gurgling coffee, the sound of the mechanism, and the smell of fresh ground unfiltered beans. More trouble.....yes, but it is something that stays with you forever. I get a similar feeling from making "camp" coffee over an open fire.

Steve, I don't recommend you try the hot chocolate pods AT ALL. We have one of these at work and we tried the pods. They just don't work well, don't taste good, and gunk up the machine like you wouldn't believe. You have to thoroughly clean the machine out after using a hot chocolate pod or the next person gets really nasty coffee.

I use the B&D one-cup. What type of daily cleaning did she do? I just rinse the filter, but I'm not much of a cleaner in general.
