  • Produce prices at Wal-Mart - Wow

We went to our local super Wal-Mart today. We've been there a bunch of times and have bought some grocery items there but never really paid attention to the fresh produce until today. Here are some sample prices that we paid today followed in parentheses by the price we usually pay at our supermarket (Wegman's, which is typically cheaper than the other chains in our area).

    green peppers $.99/lb ($1.79)
    iceberg lettuce $1.00 ($1.49)
    granny smith apple $1.37/lb ($1.69)
    strawberries $1.50/lb ($3.00)

The one item I specifically noticed was more expensive was bananas - $.69/lb at Wal-Mart; $.49/lb at Wegman's. Just on the few items we bought, we saved several dollars, more than enough to make it worth going there when we need to stock up as the store is farther away than the supermarket. It isn't close enough to run over there when we just need a couple of items but if we can plan to go there when we need a bunch of stuff, that would help trim the food bill.

In our area of the county, Wal-mart groceries are a bit pricey- one of our locally owned grocery stores are much cheaper. I'm glad you found some good deals, though.

Walmart, in my area at least, is cheaper than the other grocery stores. Almost always by a couple dollars too. And it is closer to me than other grocery stores so I save even more!

I shop on base at the commissary, and because they are not for profit its always cheaper. They were closed today so I went to walmart. What would normally have been prob $40 in groceries instead cost $50

I also get most of my groceries from the commissary, but I've also noticed that their produce (at least here) isn't always that great.... bananas not nearly ripe, apples frozen in the middle or overly-bruised, and so on... So I normally get my fruits from a grocery in town.

On the 'always cheaper' note, it depends.... they don't have "store brands", so it's always the national name-brand products. Some items are still cheaper, but others are cheaper out in town. Meat and dairy are definitely the best savings there, however. Milk is 50-60c cheaper, and meat normally at least 30-50c/lb cheaper.

Bananas are on sale on Tuesdays here. We only have two grocery stores in our town, Walmart and Country Mart. Country Mart is only cheaper if it is from the sales ad (and sometimes even then not always cheaper).

We have an Aldi's in the next town (20 miles) as well as Super Target. But I figure with gas, and eating out and the extra "need to stop here because I am in town", I don't save to do that.

Can't remember where I read this but a good idea is to make a price guide. A listing of the common foods you buy and their prices. Small notebook so you can keep it with you when shopping.

I have always shopped walmart and it was ALWAYS the cheapest

but lately everyone who used to be to good or to PC to shop there does and man the prices are high all the sudden, so much in fact I have decided to quit buying my groceries there

I never have liked there produce tho I am so not picky but for reason I do not get it is already rotten when you buy it I do not buy "fresh" meat there either they use a process that keeps it looking fresh even when its not,I have wondered if they do something similar to the fruit and veggies

we have another market that is in a questionable part of town I have started shopping there their prices are much cheaper ,not sure what I'll do when the masses change to this store as well

We buy virtually all of our grocery and household items at Wal-Mart with the exception of produce. The prices are right but the quality and selection is frequently sub-par. As a result, we buy our fruit and veggies at a regional grocery store or, when in-season, the farmer's market.

They are renovating my Walmart and turning it into a Super Walmart. Should be done in a few months. I am really excited to see what sort of deals I can find there. There are already a few things I pick up there foodwise.

The only down side is that the # of shoppers there seems to have DOUBLED in recent months. You can't find a parking space and can barely move through the store. It's ridiculous even on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening!

Walmart, Target & Trader Joes are all significantly cheaper than Albertson's and Safeways out in California

The produce at our Wal-Mart is totally gross.

Everything we bought yesterday, and other things we looked at but didn't buy, was quite good. We were impressed with the price and quality for the price. I mean we can go to Produce Junction and get cheap stuff but the quality isn't so great. This was cheap and good.
