  • What factors influence moving out of state?

Me an dmy husband grew up in MI. I was fortunate enough to mee the man of my dreams who had bought a house that was a good size before we met which I moved into.
Due to being frugal and DINKS for many years(first and last child is on the way) we almost have our home paid off.

It can get depressing constantly reading negative headlines in MI, but I like the area I live in. I love the parks, closeness to lakes, upscale walking downtown feeling cities, and relatively low cost of living.

My dh is laid off. WE have a lengthy emergency fund so we are not freaking out esp since house not is low. (no cc debt and 2 cars paid off) but at least one of us (preferably him the first year or due due to child on way and evenually both of us) needs to get back to work evenually here.

People mention movign out of state, and I don't want to nor think I would consider it for a long time. I know a lot of people considering it. I have heard stories about people relocating to get laid off from jobs they relocated to, people leaving wife and kids to rent an apartment with a group of guys in a different state b/c the houses are too expensive(ie Seattle), and people not liking the area they moved to.

I can't dismiss success stories I know which include people working as occupational therapitss, teachers, and university directors etc from freinds who moved out of state who are more likely to be bagging groceries if still in MI.

Do you guys have thoughts on making the big move? Obviously it is easy straight out of college. lol

    Depends on the job.

If DH can get some 1099 contracts, he could work Mon-Thurs 40-50 hour weeks, then come back on the weekends. I have many offers like this come my way each year.

Many good tax reasons to do this.

I don't live anywhere near my family and would move anywhere that I have to for a job. It depends on what you value. I love my family but the job opportunities are NIL. So it's a moot point. Same with DH.

yes, family is important but so is making a living huh? BEsides cousins etc. I rarely see ,I only have my parents here in MI, but they reside in Florida a big portion of the year anyway. (lucky them) lol So family would not be an issue one way or the other in a choice to move.

I would think if moving, it might be better to move TO family.

We sorta did that, eons ago when we moved here to Charlotte we stayed with his brother for a time.

If you are not attatched to the area, why not explore? but do it with a safety net.

What about your DH --does he have family either in Michigan or elsewhere? That is to be considered as well and might tie in to what Princess Perky says about moving to family. If you need to find work elsewhere, you might consider moving closer to Florida where you would still be closer to your family at least part of the year. In hard times, the support of good family can help you through. They possibly can expand your resources for jobs, too.

I would go back to work now (him, since you are preg). Most likely he will get a lower paying job and that will make your EF last a lot longer. Also, it may take awhile to find even a low paying job...

if you have your house almost paid off, no cc debt, you don't need to move!
