DH and I both do for years. We used to live apart and it was nice to have.

2 cell phones in our house (now)

We had Cingular, which I hated horrible since they skanked me when they bought out AT&T. That said, we have T-Mobile now which has been great.

I think we have the family plan, 1000 minutes a month. It's like $69 a month I think. Mobile to Mobile saves us because most of our family is on T-Mobile.

Will be getting a 3rd one at X-mas time for my 10 year old daughter. Mainly like DisneySteve, my daughter goes to freinds, has sleep overs, etc and myself and her mom want her to have access to us at all times. She has been taking my phone when she goes places so we figured it's time.

DH (co. pays his bill) and I both have one, 12 year old son really thinks he needs one but he doesn't. He is usually with one of us and when he is away I reach him by calling the adult he is with. I wish I could disconnect the home (land line) phone but I worry that we may need it in case of emergency.

DH has a cell, and like Kirbycruiser, his company pays for it. I have a pay-as-you-go cell with Virgin Mobile. DD is 13 and does not need one yet. When she goes to high school next year we will probably get her one.

May I ask a question of manners? Do you think it rude if a stranger would ask to borrow your cell phone? I can imagine situations where I might ask to do so when I might not have my own cell with me.

I had one such situation. My sister and I stopped to help a driver who was pulled over on the shoulder of an interstate in the city, hanging out her front door with the door open into the traffic lane. Traffic was backed up a long distance. When we saw the cause, we pulled over to help. We did not have a cell phone, but flagged down the first car possible. The driver gladly let us use the phone.

In that case, the stranger could clearly see there was a problem that could be helped by his phone. But what if the need was not clear? Would you tend to say "no" to a stranger's request? Would you be afraid I might run with your phone, or use the distraction to mug you? (I look really scary, you know. )

It is hard to find a public phone anymore since cell phones have become so common.

To answer my own question, yes, if they gave a convincing reason,
I would let a stranger use my phone or would make a call for them.

Maybe if I need to use a stranger's phone, I should offer to pay.

Or maybe I just need to remember to take the darned thing with me more often.

Both my wife and I have one for convenience and security's sake. Kids are too young (6 and 3).

I would first probably be taken aback, because it is not a common request. I would probably say no, but like in your example, it would probably depend on the situation. If somebody was in an accident then I probably would. I've heard that it you should never give your camera to somebody who comes up to you and offers to take your picture - always ask somebody to take your picture. Same thing for cell phones. If they're not in distress then "thief" is the first thing that I would think of. On the other hand, it's not unusual for the contestants on The Amazing Race on CBS to borrow people's cell phones. I have yet to see somebody refuse a request (could have been edited out), but there is probably some on-the-spot pressure and legitimacy from a tv camera filming the action.

Were 2 people with one cell, plus the landline. We don't use the cell much at all. We have to remind ourselves of appropriate times to take it out with us.

We need the landline for home internet. Cell phones are used for most phone conversations. I don't even give out my home phone # to many people.

Wife and I share a plan and share minutes. I go over minutes 1 month per year (soccer tryouts make my phone ring off the hook). Wife does well, except there were 2 months of a job search which took her over the plan minutes.

I would think if it was an emergency sure...but if there doesn't seem to be a need..I would offer to make the call for them or something...keeping the phone in my own hand.

But then it is free to call anywhere in the USA for us.

Don't have one, don't want one. I don't even like answering the phone at home - I certainly don't want to be reachable when I'm not. I can understand them for emergencies. I would probably get one (pay as you go type - not a plan) if I were doing a lot of driving in more remote areas, etc. For me at this time I don't need it.

ive had this one about 2 years, b4 that i had a prepaid, for emergencies only, but cost of having a landline, being the cost that that is, Ill stick with my cell on moms family plan, for ten dollars a month. I only get 250 mins a month and 250 texts, but that works for me.

We have 2 cellphones in our house. One is for business and mine is rarely used because it is for emergencies and personal use. I turn it on, but many times forget it is there. They are also good for text messaging when you want to give information to someone in a brief sentence without staying on the phone for upteen minutes. Text messaging allows to control your calls more efficiently.
