I know a few stories of people who did odd things to try and stop the lunch theft..I myself am never taking an unknown lunch..who knows what kind of anti hand washing person I am eating the food of! Not to mention some people think nothing of eating food 10 days old while others wont touch it past day 1...you just never know.
On to the oddities..one fellow put a bible verse on the front..not the whole thing, just the number and book, anything pertaining to not stealing worked.
Another put a date on his food...from last month...not a neat one like pretending he missed the month, he would use a week ago's date so it looked old.
Many notes taped to food say things like 'This belongs to an angry postal worker' or the like...or 'my Dr says I have to eat this with my medication' (blue pill and green pill, also the red if this is stolen)
Another fridge habit was the 'need some take some, have some leave some' condiment stack...mustard, mayo, hot sauce, the like...meant no one had to bring in a whole jar of mayo or anything...
the number one rule to avoid having your lunch stolen, is to spend many meals lamenting your lack of cooking skills (or that of your spouse) seems to work well for my husband, no one has yet taken his lunch
(actually he keeps it in a cooler under his desk)
Oh and the number one culprit for lunch stealing..cleaning ladies..often in businesses they are under orders to remove ALL food on Friday night, including containers.

Once someone took one slice of pizza of the two I had in a takeout/leftovers container. I was not happy! It was a clear container so I think someone just liked the looks of my pizza. I could not imagine stealing part of someone's lunch!

dog food sandwich
I used to work in a very fancy brokerage firm where they had problems with fridge raiders. My co-worker made an Alpo sandwich and wrapped it all up in her usual lunch bag. It disappeared, but it was the last lunch to disappear.
Much to our chagrin, no one went home ill so we couldn't identify the culprit.

I've never heard of such a thing. It hasn't ever happened to me (and I would be PISSED). I would never even consider stealing someone else's lunch either. Man some people are weird. I don't think I could work in an environment where I had to worry about coworkers stealing my lunch.

I haven't had it happen to me, but have heard enough about it that I bring my own cooler and keep it with me. This also helps when there's no room in the refrigerator (I'm constantly amazed about how many people forget about their lunches in the fridge). I heard that a director walked in on somebody raiding ice cream that was clearly labeled 'do not eat - for customer service party'. She apparently was so flabbergasted that she didn't say anything. What a shame. It was a perfect opportunity to hold somebody accountable for stealing.

This actually happens? I mean, I've seen Dilbert cartoons about it, but I didn't think it really happened!
I prefer not to put my food in the fridge at all because it's pretty gross. A couple of months ago we were having a scheduled power outage for the weekend so everyone was told to clean their stuff out of the fridge. Of course, no one did so everything spoiled (not that most of it wasn't already moldy).
This does remind me of a co-worker though. He often grabs (his) lunch out of the fridge and says "Hmm, this person's lunch looks pretty good!" At least I THOUGHT he was always kidding...

This is not a problem at my office anymore - small office now and we know everyone. This has been a huge problem at my husband's office though. We got him a lunch bag with a double zipper with the intention of putting a lock on it. Never got around to it, so he just ran a key ring through the zippers. It was a PAIN to undo, so no one could grab his lunch quickly. Worked great til they decided to clean the fridge - unannounced - and threw away everything. Yes, the practically brand new lunch bag as well. That pissed me off. For some reason it hasn't been a problem since then. Can't figure that one out.

I have parts of my lunches disappear and it did not make me happy! At my new school (I've been here 6 years) it hasn't happened.
A nurse at a nursing home was telling me that one of the doctors comes and raids the fridge there and takes things out of people's lunches. He's pretty creepy, so it doesn't surprise me.
I wouldn't do this because it is stealing...plus, I'm kind of germphobic...don't know what's been touched or eaten off already. Yuck.
