Re: Newsworthy? Try Try Again
Coin experts, however, questioned whether the rotating designs will be enough to allow the new presidential $1 coin to succeed where the Susan B. Anthony dollar, introduced in 1979, and the Sacagawea dollar, introduced in 2000, failed.
“I don’t know of any country that has successfully introduced the equivalent of a dollar coin without getting rid of the corresponding paper unit,” said Douglas Mudd, author of a new book on the history of money, “All the Money in the World.”
Mint Director Edmund C. Moy said Congress made the decision to keep the dollar bill as part of new dollar coin legislation in 2005.
speak up: keep the one! if you've got to get rid of something, nix the $2!!!

Re: Newsworthy? Try Try Again
I know they did it in Canada, but I still think it's a lousy idea. One example: We are in the midst of Girl Scout cookie sales. I go to work each morning with a wad of $1 bills in my pocket to make change. It is very simple to slip 20 or 30 bills in my pocket and go on my way. No way would I want to walk around with 30 $1 coins in my pocket. That would be way too cumbersome. I, for one, hope they don't eliminate the $1 bill. Apparently, 75% of the country agrees with me.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks that is a rather unflattering image of Washington. He looks kind of angry.Steve

I do think the concept is neat. What a great educational tool to teach kids (and adults) about the presidents. Most people probably couldn't name more than a handful, and just the famous ones most likely. So I'll be glad when the Garfield or Arthur or Harrison coins come out. Maybe folks will learn something. That wouldn't be such a bad thing.
BTW - They said yesterday that the Philly mint is producing 4 million of these coins daily! I thought that was quite impressive.Steve

Incidentally, I thought this blog entry had some interesting thoughts about the dollar coins. But the best part is what he wrote at the bottom about the other 3 dollar coins going into circulation.
John "Babyface" Adams, Thomas "Unibrow" Jefferson, and James "Eddie Munster" Madison

Re: Newsworthy? Try Try Again
i think the coins would be good for me. i am used to using bills, and i think i might be able to save coins better. i usualluy forget about my other coins, so i might mix some dollar ones in there and then cash them out at the end of the month.
2nd of all, i think britney shaving her melon is more newsworthy....ok, maybe not
