you must be kidding with the PETA list. many of PETA's claims simply don't stand up to close scrutiny. See 7 Thing you didn't know about PETA.

i've worked at two consumer product companies so far, it's confident that major companies don't test on animals. i suspect the reason that you don't use eye shadow, blush, or mascara should be extended to lipstick and foundation as well. they contain common ingredients that are animal-derived.

by no means i'm being critical, but i feel that many consumers are misguided.

My friend used to work for Johnson and Johnson, and he was security at the animal testing lab. His job was to keep the protestors away. He also told me that there was always a shortage of animals, so they actually used local stray cats and dogs for animal testing.

I also know that Proctor and Gamble is a very active participant in animal testing.

I'd rather pay more for a high quality product from a specialty store that I know is cruelty free than buy a cheapo drugstore product that dosent agree wtih me morally.

what's your friend's name? i was working (2003-2006) at J&J (Skillman, NJ). J&J consumer products have not been tested on animal for at least 25 years. prescription drugs are required to be tested, by law. i'm sure you would like to see that before phase 1 clinical trial.

i had a 1-year co-op at P&G (Cincinatti, OH) in 2001. P&G have not tested on animal for at least 20 years.

make sure you have some sort of personal experience or background before quoting inaccurate statements found on the Internet.

I have substituted all products. I hate foundation because it messes with the pores.
When I was a few yrs younger, people would staop me and ask about my skin-care products. Not ablemish. Secret: water
In addition , I try not to use alchohol based products etc.
Vitamins and juices help.

BTW how are the down feathers for blankets obtained? (Maybe I don't want to know). I passed up getting down anything for years because I assumed they are not collected in a humane manner. However, the alternative fills are oil based. Not great either. Any ideas.

land's end offers a silk filled comforter as an alternative to down. silk is warm and lightweight, which are pluses. silk is also an animal product (from silk worms).

information on how silk is harvested is available below. not very nice, be forewarned, but i'm guessing most of the general public finds worm mistreatment easier to swallow. ever notice that compassion typically increases with the amount of fur a critter has?

There are lists for products that don't contain animal ingredients (vegan) and lists of companies that do not test their product on animals.

This can be a complicated issue at times and I use a variety of animal organization sources to ferret out the issue.

I like it best when they clearly label the container that they do not test on animals.

Although great progress has been made in not using animals for testing there are still big companies that do such (Proctor & Gamble, Arm &
Hammer (maker of baking soda)).

I use Alberto Vo5 Shampoo and Conditioner as it is very inexpensive and has on the bottle that it does not test on animals. (I usually easily find it for a dollar). I also sometimes use Dr. Bronner liquid soaps (they have the picture of the bunny on the bottle).

I also purchase basic ingredients from the health food store to make some of my own cosmetics so that I know what is really in them.

I use cornstarch for loose powder, coconut oil for skin, vitamin e oil (from a bottle) for an eye 'cream'. I also pick up Neutragena if I am buying cosmetics in Wal Mart as (the last time I checked) they do not test on animals.

great thread, I am vegetarian too, and I know about how this can sometimes be unfilling (yet for me fulfilling).

I use the Boca Italian Sausages (taste so much like real meat and
are very filling) I get four to a pack at regular Wal Mart price of
$2.50 per pack. And I have found that canned black beans (also
a superfood or super healthy) are very filling. Lentils and some
other beans leave me feeling hungry.

I also will eat cheese and an occasional egg also. I prefer almond
milk (which I make my own) and soymilk (both buy and have a
soymilk machine).

In terms of the conflicting reports........ most companies that do not test on animals will say so on the product packaging.

I will not buy a beauty product if it does not have a statement like that.

FWIW I do not agree wtih PETA on most of their stances (anti pet ownership, the whole world being vegan, etc). However their list gave me a broad overview of the companies that are and are not animal friendly.

I read labels whenever I shop.

I knew about silk at a young age. My mom hates silk. She is the one who got me started on cruelty-free silk. They let the worm crawl out of the pupa and then they spin the yarn from it. This product is not always available. It tends to be cheaper because the worm lives to produce much more yarn!!!
Imitation meat tends to be cheaper and is easier on teh environment, energy transfer-wise.

We also adopted five stray cats. Had to let four go because apts throw a fit!!!

I respect peoples rights to not eat meat or use animal products. I respectfully believe that Human Life takes precedence over animals. I eat meat and use animal products. I don't believe in being cruel but I eat meat, pork, and chicken. I have worn fur and I wear down jackets and vests.

[B]I understand all who believethat. In nature, carnivores kill other animals. When animals are killed cruelly in abbattoirs for our entertainment, then human intelligence and generosity seems to have taken a back seat.
We do cruel things to each other as well.
Human cruelty can be appaling.
With this thread, I am not making a political statement. I merely wanted to be educated about cruelty-free products. I also wanted to get together with like minded people.
Being sanctimonious is the furtherst from my mind.

If some one started an anti-scientist group (hypothetically), I would not post on that forum, if I were to disagree.
