Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

we don't use eggs or dairy products anymore.... we use soyflour and water in place of an egg for baking... we use powdered non dairy creamer, richs non dairy creamer, and i mix powdered soy milk with purified water... our health has greatly improved... we are happier and seem to have alot of energy, dancing all around the house.... i am still having problems kicking soda altogether... i try to drink it warm, and in small glasses when i need to.... i just love soda, but, it does not love me back.....

Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

I'm losing weight by basically eating an "atkins+vegetables" diet. I was buying protein bars at walmart @ 5 for 7.50, or $1.50 a bar. Then I looked on ebay and saw a case of them for what turned out to be $.20 a bar including shipping. I bought those and keep a bunch at work, in the truck, at home, for breakfast and snacks.

I start playing in a volleyball league in March. Yeah!

mine sounds kinda weird, but it works for me: if something hasn't been in in the human diet for a couple hundred years, i try to avoid it.

basically, i try to avoid processed foods and refined starches and sugars. i use real butter, whole milk, raw sugar, lots of rice and beans, and whatever meat is a good deal. veggies are usually fresh or frozen, just because i have a bad habit of not getting them all fixed before they spoil. also, there are a couple of food staples that are common to most cultures, and those are the ones i try to rely on most: a starch (pick rice, noodles, or potatoes), onions and garlic, tomatoes, chicken.

i have weaknesses (diet cherry pepsi and krispy kreme, just not together!), but for the most part me and processed foods just don't get along anyways. can't stand twinkies and the like, mcdonald's tastes like cardboard to me, and if i wanted a frozen meal i'd make one at home rather than going to applebees.

Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

DH and I walk, hike, go to the gym or go biking for at least 45 minutes five times a week. I cannot go quite as far as before I got pregnant but the more I do the easier I hope labor will be and hopefully to regain my shape more quickly post-baby. I have also been taking my prenatal vitamins, drinking tons of water, gave up soda and coffee. Caffeine free tea is much better than I expected. DH and I are also trying to enjoy life to the fullest, build up our financial reserves and not stress about the little stuff.

Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

Interesting to see how many people make an effort to drink lots of liquid. I always figure there's no way my instincts will allow me to drink less fluid than I need, so I don't need to make an effort. However, the orally fixated part of me drinks tea all the time anyway. Drink it all the way up till bed time. Just 'cause I like to. Used to drink coffee, but that became unpleasant, plus I liked to up the calorie load with too much cream stirred in. When I am actually thirsty, to me, there is nothing better than water. Not beer, not juices, not even my favorite tea, not beer. Just water, please.

The exercise I do for better health varies. I used to be really good about walking even in the cold weather such as we are having now. But in the last two years, something changed and just can't generate the body heat I need, especially in the extremities, no surprise. So this winter, my mainstay excercise is dancing (all by my very inhibited self), stair stepping, weight-llifing, and my own version of yoga-like stretches & moves that I've accumulated since I was a child. When spring gets here, I'll be back to gardening. I can get a really good work out from gardening!

I am in about the fourth month of a way of eating that even I consider somewhat extreme, but which has resulted in better lab numbers, weight, and day-today energy than I have had in ten years. I think it will be my forever way of eating.

Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

i guess I am the unhealthiest person on here. I don't eat any fruits or vegetables at all, just mostly meat and some starches. I drink liquor in the evening with my dinner. No one in my family has ever lived a long life, so I have not had any living blood relatives for years. I do not have check ups or the regular tests that most women have. I have only been to the doctor twice in my life and I have never been sick. I guess it is mostly luck or just plain meaness on my part.

not saying it's you, but a lot of the general public confuses the sensation of thirst with that of hunger. that's why one of the oldest diet tricks in the book is if you're hungry, try drinking a glass of water and waiting 15 minutes.

also (read this one on a 64 oz personal water bottle once) by the time you feel 'parched', you're body is already dehydrated to some extent.

we are drinking more heart healthy beverages nowadays... orange juice, tomato juice or v8, pomegrante juice, cranberry juice, and real hot chocolate made with dark cocoa..

I like to drink a lot of water. I wish vitamin pills were smaller and easier to swallow.

Re: what are you doing to stay healthy?

Drinking plenty of water even though I have a Diet Pepsi daily.

For breakfast I have 2 slices of turkey bacon, 1/2 cup of shredded wheat with bran flakes on top, an English muffin, a 1/2 cup of orange juice, a cup of skim milk and a cup of decaf coffee and a half banana or tablespoon of fruit chunks over my cereal

For lunch I have a salad mixed with tuna, turkey or a boiled egg, 4 thin crackers and a Diet Pepsi

For dinner I have a 2 oz serving of chicken, tuna, turkey or roast beef, a slice of wheat bread with a pat of butter, two veggies (preferably squash, green beans, collard greens, or spinach) and corn or a mashed potato

Having MS limits me at times to how long I can stay on the treadmill or how far I can walk in a given day. I try to climb the stairs atleast twice a day.
