Re: How much do you pay for a gallon of milk?

Right now Walmart is has all varieties from skim to whole for $2.17/gallon....recently is has been down to $1.99 and as high as $2.29. Most convenience stores around here sell 1% for $2.29/gallon and over $3/gallon for all other kinds.
Even if Walmart wasn't the cheapest I would still buy their milk...it seems to last longer than milk I get elsewhere.

I don't buy a gallon at a time because I don't drink milk! Only my husband does. I use soymilk when I bake.

For my DH, I buy organic, hormone-free milk from pasture raised cows that aren't kept in cruel conditions. I buy a quart at a time, and it's $1.75. Expensive? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely.

I use soymilk and non-fat reconstituted milk. The soy I'll pay 99cents a quart for. Not sure on the milk price; even if the powdered milk doesn't offer huge savings (which it may-I'd have to calculate), I absolutely love it's conveniece.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to buy more milk soon! I don't quite know how to do the litres to gallons conversion so I can't tell you how much I spend on it.

I almost forgot about soy milk! I make that at home and buy the soybeans in bulk, so that's only $0.39 per gallon.

We usually use the soy milk for drinking and the dairy milk for fermenting (yogurt, kefir, cheese, etc.)

1 gallon of milk is 3.79 liters.

                      So how much is yours?

I pay $4.19 for a gallon of Purity Sweet Acidopholus milk. It is name brand and pretty expensive but we love the taste.

I buy 2L for $3.69, so 1 gallon would be about $6.99? Does that make sense? It would be cheaper if I bought more milk at a time, but I only drink it in tea or for cooking/baking, so 2L lasts me a week or two.

Yes - makes sense. My math came out the same.

Hubby and I have been very interested in all of the different responses to this thread. Right now the only dairy milk we buy is either the cheap plain homogenized/pasteurized or powdered dry. We boost up the nutrition content by culturing it into kefir, buttermilk, and yogurt and drink the homemade soy milk.

It looks like it would actually be cost effective for us to stop buying fluid milk, switch to powdered and soy only, but spring for a club store pack of UHT half and half to use for tea. A case of individually packed half and half would last us 180 to 360 cups of tea and should easily have a shelf life of 6 months if stored properly. We could buy a case (188 ct.) for $6.43 at the club store. Not a bargain by volume when compared to milk, but over a year the strategy would actually recover the cost of a Sam's club membership on milk alone.

And that doesn't even factor in the fact that some weeks there are no $2 gallon milk sales available.

                            Hmmm.....

there's a restaurant DH and i go to that serves tea by the pot (yum!), and the bring a little creamer container of sweetened condensed milk for the tea. i'd never thought of it before, but it sure is tasty!

We only buy regular milk, and I only but it when on sale for $1.99 or less. If I can't find it on sale, we use powdered.
