  • The price of convenience

Convenience stores.........do you spend money in them? It's amazing to me what people buy in a convenience store when they could buy it for far less at the grocery or dollar store. Employees also waste a ton of money buying food and ciggarettes and also fountain drinks. Why not bring their lunch to work? It would be much healthier and cheaper than fried burritos, fried chicken wings and nachos!

only when I am desperate and driving 20 miles and the cost of gas out weighs the cost of buying at a convenience store

Usually for a 20oz soda in a pinch! It really gets me crazy knowing I can get a a large bottle at the supermarket for less. You really do pay for convenience!

Every once in a while I buy a soda, and my husband buys donuts, but it comes out of our blow money. I do know what you mean though - I was behind a guy the other day, and I swear he had to be doing his grocery shopping there.

I think the best thing ever invented where the CC at the pumps! I never even have to walk into those places anymore. Now occasionally I will cave, and go in for the nachos...but I'd say only about 2 times a year and maybe 6 times a year for soda. And I've NEVER done grocery shopping there at all! I can remember a time or two picking something up on a road trip, but that's a road trip and comes out of vacation $$.

Yeah, I pump gas and get back on the road. I never go into the store. I would think this has hurt their business.

Pay-at-the-pumps came out about the time our first son was born and I was so glad!!! Never had to drag small babies into the store to pay for gas. Along those lines though, I DID often frequent the drive throughs for milk. Again, no need to drag babies into the grocery store just for milk. I especially did this when both children were small since they are only 16 months apart. I definitely paid for convenience then!!

                  But now...nope. I don't go in.

The only thing that we routinely go into a convenience store for are hoagies at Wawa. Once a month, I go straight from work to a board meeting at our temple. I stop and grab a hoagie on the way. I think they are $3.69, which is not a terribly expensive dinner, IMO.

I never buy anything there unless we are desperately out of something and need it for the night's supper. There is one about a mile away.

I think it depends on what you buy. Soda is fairly cheap from the fountain ($0.79 for 32 oz) but for grocery items like toilet paper, shampoo, or, say, sour cream, you're paying sometimes double for an item!

The only time I buy groceries at a convenience store is on a holiday, when the grocery stores are closed and I've forgotten an ingredient in a recipe. Didn't happen this year, but I've made several trips to the convenience store for that reason in past years! LOL

When we put in new pumps at two of our stores a few months ago we were debating having pay at the pump just because fewer people do come in. We did decide to have it though, and really it has not hurt the business at all but then these are two neighborhood stores quite far away from any others. It's all about high impulse, high volume and high profit. Just like any other stores things are put in certain areas to increase sales and profits. At our stores we do not make but about 10 cents on bread, milk, butter and eggs, also bacon. We are even cheaper than the HEB and Walmart on those items. Of course that's to get the people in the door. We've also been approved for WIC and will so be able to get that going! My boss is a very smart business man! He could sell ice to the Eskimo's as the saying goes!

I just pump gas and go! I never go inside unless i absolutely HAVE to! So my money isn't spent at the convience store!
