We don't live in the town I'm talking about. We live about 8 miles away in a very nice town - safe, great schools, 85K median income, good shopping and dining. We're very happy living here.

Why do I work where I do? That's where the job opportunity was when I was in need of a job. Could I have gone elsewhere at some point? Sure, I could have, but overall I've been pretty satisfied with my job until the last year or so and I've been there 16 years. There was never really any compelling reason to go looking for something else.

This isn't a country; this is the internet. It is a specific site with specific rules, hosted by specific people with a specific focus, and a history of kind sociability and support for fellow posters.

My city and some of its suburbs are poor, too. Some suburbs have great household income. We move up and down on several lists of "worst this," or "best that". It's the city with the Arch, which right now is kind of hard to get to due to an effort to make the area "best-er than ever."

Just for clarification, this has nothing to do with what the US calls anything. It is a definition.

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement.

If that comment upset or inflamed anyone here into an argument -- which apparently it did -- then I am worried for the survival of this country. (Yes, yes, it's the Internet. But very few of this forum's posters live outside the US.)

I've seen a whole lot of OT in these threads. Some quite emotion-laden. None of them were pegged "Troll".

I've noticed a lot of major cities in every state seeming to have a growing disparity of poor and rich whatever level of COL the city is. There are always pockets of wealth and very poor in each city and it's becoming more noticeable.

I just read 4 of the most affordable cities are skyrocketing in cost of living the fastest, way above SF and NYC. Sounds weird but it was so cheap in these places the rate of COL is just increasing very rapidly. I think it was Pittsburgh, Portland, and Dallas, and one more.

So I would guess just because you live in St Louis, Charlotte, or NJ doesn't mean nice can't be next to poor/rundown.

I noticed a lot of people are homesteading fishin. For sure in hawaii it's becoming rampant in the rural areas with a lot of drug problems. So I've been told watch Dog Bounty Hunter. LOL

People being upset over rude comments makes you worried about the survival of this country? What concerns me more is that it seems to be the norm to be rude and not care about anyone but yourself.

I find it rude to suggest wives are people who are an inherent hindrance in being able to make favorable decisions in life. Also, you told rennigade that because he doesn't have a wife, he could not understand. The truth is you did not understand the situation yourself. Disneysteve was asked the question; I doubt you know him well enough to fill in for him. You just wanted to make this quip about wives and not having one.

I was already annoyed by some of your previous rudeness even on other threads.

It isn't just about that one comment. It is about the many personal attacks you have made on this board.

It is bullying behavior and I have come here for financial reasons, not to have someone berate entire people groups, make condescending remarks, and attack people.

It needs to be called out and it needs to stop.

                        It is not ok.

                          Yes, it is.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the thread, added nothing to the conversation, and was rude to the person at whom it was directed.

I am not sure how true the study is, I am sure there are places all over where it is hard to get ahead, but with the banking industry here, there is an amass of wealth in certain sectors.
That does surprise me. It would seem to be a diverse yet growing economy thus opportunity compared to other areas of the state.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I thought it would be one of those former factory towns where there aren't any jobs.
