  • Have You Checked Your Employee Benefits Lately?

Beyond looking at the big, open-enrollment type benefits (medical/dental/vision insurance, 401k, FSA, etc) have you recently checked out any little benefits that your employer may provide?

Last night I carefully looked through my employer's "lifestyle benefits" web page. Most of it was geared towards trying to sell me stuff I don't need or want (for example: theme park discounts). But I did find one item I will take advantage of: 15% discount on Turbo Tax. I already wrote a note to myself and put it in my 2016 tax file. I wish I had known about this discount for my 2015 taxes! (I used to take advantage of the discount Vanguard offered customers, but they stopped that last year.)

My regular job has no benefits but my part time job has some pretty decent ones. They do offer all kinds of discounts on travel stuff, theme parks, Broadway shows, etc. They had a special last month to get 25% off your bill at Maggiano's. We went there for my birthday because of that and saved $16. We were thinking about getting tickets to Aladdin on Broadway through them but it didn't allow you to choose your seats. Normally, I would have taken a chance but we were going with others and I didn't want to get them upset if we ended up with less than ideal seats. The discount was quite good, though. DW and I definitely may take advantage of that in the future.

We are fortunate in that we have some pretty cool benefits from an employer.
-gym membership paid for every year.
-don't wear glasses? No problem, use the vision insurance to get off the rack sunglasses instead (up to two pairs per year)
-commute allowance if you don't work from home
      -discounted home and auto insurance
-discounted and sometimes free software for personal use
-sometimes they'll do special things where you can get a few hundred bucks for signing up for health programs. Along with free fitbits or other health trackers.
      -free legal consults
      -discounted personal cell phone plans
-discounts on lots of items you might purchase for personal use

The military has a lot of benefits...I'm pretty sure I know about a lot of them.

It is not something I look at regularly because most of the perks are discounts I can obtain anyway via coupon books/codes.

Doesn't feel much like a perk if I can find the same discount with a couple of clicks.
