  • What frugal thing did you do today? 2014 edition

I was looking back through some old threads and there were some really interesting comments in old ones about frugal things that people had done that day. I thought it would be good to resurrect a thread like that, so here is the 2014 edition of what frugal thing did you do today?

To get things started, I ended up doing my cooking for the entire week this morning. I find that if I do my meals in advance, it's much less likely that I will take myself out sometime during the week when I get tired. I cooked three different meals with plenty of leftovers so that I can have them on multiple days. This should actually lasting more than a week, but I think I'm going to try to do this each Saturday morning from now on.

The frugal thing I did was done not just for frugality. But I think most people would consider it extreme in the 21rst century US: I washed my laundry by hand and hung it out on the line to dry. Sheets, jeans, the whole kit and caboodle.

I worked my 2nd job today, making an extra $240, and sold my kids' mini-trampoline for $30!

Hubby took the kids to a historical park that we got a season pass for through groupon, and took them out for lunch using Kids Dine Free... he was going to take them to Chuck E Cheese and found out that they are equally happy finding caterpillars for free

I moved older kid's hand-me-downs to younger kid's clothing drawers. I usually store "in between" sizes, but they are just one size apart these days. (I don't know how long that will last - but it makes it easy!)

I'm new to this site and I think this thread is a really cool idea!

Today I decided to decline an offer on Living Social, so doing that saved me atleast $10. Instead, of going out to eat, I prepared a meal at home. Also, I am happy that I dont buy sugary fruit juices anymore! We drink water or water with lemons, its much more refreshing than drinking sugary Sunny D...

I found a 12 month Netflix voucher/gift card for $30 and Hulu for the same price saving me $180 in the next year

Did a speed inventory of pantry yesterday while seeking box of graham crackers that got shoved to a back corner. Concluded we need to use up stuff before summer visitors arrive and meals change dramatically over summer. I'm challenging myself to limit groceries to fresh fruit, vegetables, greens and a minimal of dairy. This AM I restocked the fridge freezer by 'shopping' our deep freeze. It's still cold here so I've started home made beef & barley soup in the crock pot to accompany dinner of chef salad, thin sliced left over roast beef, popovers and mixed frozen vegetables.

One of the most practical electric appliances we have is a small meat slicer. It lets us slice meat nearly paper thin or 5 other levels just like a deli.

Because I paid off my car today I treated myself but I brought my own drink and coffee from home to the place I bought some lunch. Saved me about 4-5 dollars.

I also got a hair cut at a discount hair cutting place and used a coupon. Another 3 dollar savings.

Sold items we no longer needed at a garage sale and donated the items we no longer needed.

Purchased picture frames at a garage sale (11 frames for $7) and used spray paint on hand to update them for use. Ate meals at home!

Quick stop at the library today to preview a travel book I plan to buy but the Consumer Magazine, May 2014 was on the table. Terrific articles on Stupid Fees which included ATM, Overdraft, CC, Mortgage Pre Payment, Origination, document, late payment, Mutual Fund Sales, Mortality risk for example. Most of these can be avoided or negotiated away. The magazine rated Smart Watches. I didn't know I wanted it until I read the article. The magazine had terrific articles on saving money buying insurance.

I sold my second car today for 900 dollars … and I canceled the car insurance on it. I will get a refined check of 100 dollars. I also took the 900 dollar and sent it to Sallie Mae to go towards my student loans.

                              Glad this Thread is Back

I hung the laundry on the clothesline this morning. And requested a new book at the library rather than buying it, although I am #85 on the wait list!
