  • my uncle is an extreme cheapskate

today i went to a funeral service, i spent $200 on a cheap suite and my uncle went in a $13 sport coat, $5 white shirt and $6 pants all by way of a thrift shop. he went to put on the pants this morning to find a hole right dead smack on the left cheeck and his white underwear was clearly visable. what does he do, he busts out a sharpie and colors his thrift shop underwear black where it would show through the hole. i must say he did solve the problem.

he lives in washington and the last time he came down to california he tells me he needs to buy a cheap pair of pants in case he has to change a tire that the steel threads are showing on, he did not want to dirty his $6 pair of pants so he opted for a dingy $4 pair "just in case" he gets a flat. he has never bought a new car nor new tires for any of his vehicles.

just a funny story on a somber day that i had to share.

    Your uncle is awesome

I buy cheap clothes - even some thrift store stuff. But there are some things you just buy new

Using a sharpie to color your underwear black is great! Talk about thinking on the fly.

Now the tires thing is alarming. If a tire goes dead suddenly while driving he endangers other people on the road. That is not right. Plus, does he even have proper stopping ability? That, too, endangers others unnecessarily.

Who would buy dress clothes (whether at a thrift store or elsewhere) and not try them on before heading off to any occasion?

I would say your uncle takes a lot for granted.

I agree. It's not going to be frugal when he kills someone on the road and gets sued for not maintaining his car properly. If someone hit me because they were driving on tires that bad I'd sure the hell sue them. (And I am in general not very litigious and hate frivolous lawsuits.)

Agreed about the tire. It's sort of the cheap and frugal. Frugal is buying new tires asap because you maintain things you own so they last longer. Driving a tire till it pops and injuring or causing injury to save a few bucks is cheap. You don't care about the welfare and well being of others as long as you can save an extra buck is morally wrong and that's when you cross the line of frugal to cheap.

First of all, I'm assuming that your uncle isn't hurting for money but just in fact being "cheap".

Nice improv though. However to see just how extreme he is see if he goes back to the thrift shop, buys a pair of $0.50 black underwear and wears the same holey pants

I agree with the others though. He really has to take care of the tire situation.
