  • Reason to save your shopping receipts

Did you know that if you buy something at Walmart & it then goes on sale -
because of their price guarantee - they will refund the difference in the
    price back to you?????

The customer service folks say, if you have your receipt & your items go on
sale, you are entitled to a customers price satisfaction.
They will then give you the difference in cash, or you may return the items
& re-buy them at the lower price.
The customer service gal also said - when you mention that you will return
the items & re-buy them, they will usually just give you your cash back to
avoid the extra time & effort for you!

I'm sure this works at lots of other stores too

Tip - keep 12 envelopes, each labeled with the month of the year on it
In them put the receipts for pretty much ANYTHING purchased
(things like a pack of gum or mint would of course be excluded)
As the year turns over, reuse the envelope of the new month approaching.
For example, January is coming up so go thru that new monthly envelope,
review what's in there before tossing the year old receipts.
then reuse the envelope for this January
If there is a big item receipt, you might hang onto that separately a little longer.
This way you'll have receipts for items that are just about a year old.
And believe me they can come in handy.

Now at Christmas time, keep a special envelope of Christmas presents
Because of the reason they were purchased.
Also, for big ticket items, (expensive stuff)

I completely agree with this advice. Receipts are good for returns, exchanges, price adjustments, budgeting, tax writeoffs, historical reference, credit card reconciliation/disputes, rebates (that you find out about after the fact), a slew of purposes.

To this end, you might to check out Price Protectr online.

Here's their blurb: "There are lots of stores out there that offer price protection policies -- when the price drops on an item you've purchased, they'll refund you the difference. But there's a catch... it's up to you to watch prices.

Price Protectr makes it simple to keep track of your purchases and get your money back. It's free. It's easy. It's free and easy money. How often do you get that offer?"

Walmart will also price match other stores as long as it's not a % off ad. If it's a certain $$ amount they will honor other store sales prices.

p.s. - Target is not so friendly - they give 2 weeks on the sale price and you must have a receipt. If it's 3 weeks later you will need to repurchase and return on your old receipt.

for major/expensive items or those with warranty, we staple the receipt to the booklet accompaning. When we had too many booklets to fit the drawer, we dumped them into page protectors in a 3 ring binder.

If we need to check the booklet to figure out a repair, we dump any booklets whose product has expired. This was a great price comparison when we needed a replacement.

2 other reasons I can think of (having lived through both of these):

Save receipts in the event you have a fire. I had them in envelopes according to the year in a file cabinet. They did not burn but did have some smoke damage. I had items I had totally forgotten about that the receipts helped me recall.

Also, receipts helped me prove to the court that I was providing for my children, and not my ex, so that I could continue to claim them for my taxes. I had the receipts showing their food, medical, clothing, camp fees, tution and such were all paid for by myself.

I keep the envelope system of receipt storage and it works great! I shove all receipts in there, even for fast food, gas, just in case!

How long do you keep receipts for items paid by cash fast food, gas, misc.? I only keep receipts from CC purchases over $10. to compare with the statement. I have never, ever found a discrepancy but it clued me in to 'cut-off' dates.

Does anyone else adust major purchases to follow cut-off to give xtra time to pay with no cost of credit. This only works for those who pay the entire balance by the due date.

                        Additional reason:
I found a rebate a week later for a consumable item I had bought that was within the specified pirchase time range. I still had the receipt(s) and got a total of $10 back on several purchases.

The problem I have with this is I don't really have the time to check if stuff are on sales after I buy it. For the effort, I don't think it's worth it (at least for me)

It is a good idea to organize the receipts. I started doing that after , I couldn't find the receipts for items that I wanted to return or wanted to get a mail-in rebate.

If you ever go back again. I rarely go about once a year and that's it.
