Incident at Ohio State

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims. Hope there are no fatalities.

First reported as an "active shooter." Now I am reading someone jumped the curb and struck pedestrians with his car, then got out and started attacking people with a butcher knife.

A prior report suggested two men were taken into custody.

Most recent report states the attacker is now dead, but appears to have acted alone.

Sad that the news media just blurt out everything they hear without verifying things. Especially with a tragic event like this.

It really is sad that they all race to be first and don't care about the facts or people involved. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected by this tragedy.

My daughter was woken up by the gunfire. Her dorm is one block away from the incident. She's fine. She went back to bed. I, on the other hand, am not. Many thanks to the quick action from the OSU officer that shot the guy. Now we have to wonder who pulled the fire alarm in the building to get everyone out so he could run them over and slash them. A friend of my daughter posted a pic of the guy lying dead on the sidewalk.

Tom, I'm glad your daughter is okay. What an awful thing for her to have to deal with - and you, too.

As for the media, on my way home tonight, I was listening to the local news radio station. They were reporting on the attack and the anchor asked the correspondent, "So what do we know about the shooter at this point?" Mind you this is at 5pm, many hours later. Well for one thing, we know he wasn't a shooter.

I remember seeing it somewhere yesterday that a fire alarm was pulled causing students to run out of the building and that is when the attacker ran over people with his car. It was suggested that there might have been someone else involved. But there sure doesn't seem to be any information on that, so it appears that was just more false news reported.

Also, I saw a student quoted as to hearing 6 or 7 shots. The story I just saw states that the officer fired 3 shots.

Crazy how stories differ so much from the truth.

This is no surprise. How people respond, react, and remember emergency situations varies dramatically. It doesn't mean that anyone was intentionally giving false information. Also keep in mind that people giving reports may have been in shock at the time. That's a pretty traumatic situation to have lived through and you don't just go on with your life 5 minutes later as if nothing happened. Your brain doesn't work that way.

Eye witness accounts rarely hold up. Memory is horrible to begin with...when you take into account the adrenaline, chaos, fear, etc...what happened in their mind is much different than reality.

Reminds me of a show I saw about people being falsely prosecuted. One of the main reasons was that eye witness testimony is one of the most inaccurate forms of evidence. Most people just can't remember events with any level of detail. During initial training, the CIA will weed candidates out that don't have an eye for detail.
