Does anyone visit/live in Mexico?

I've been really curious about Mexico recently. The lifestyle, the climate... the low cost of living! But I have never been outside the States. I'm a bit ignorant about it all and am just starting to really research the idea of moving there/visiting often.

Have you experienced Mexico first-hand? What are your thoughts?

Where in Mexico are you thinking? I have lots of family in Mexico and the cartels are really causing problems. This past winter my dad went down to visit his cousin who was opening up a new restaurant and a co-owner was kidnapped for ransom since his cousin refused to give part of his restaurant's proceeds to the drug cartel. Another family member was pulled over by a cartel member posing as a military member and they threw her and her daughter into the road and stole her SUV.

If you're seriously considering moving down there, I'd would research the hell out of the location you want to live in.

Now, vacationing down there is a dream. Riviera Maya is beautiful and most of the all-inclusive resorts have armed guards so it's pretty safe there. My boyfriend and I are wanting to vacation there in February, but I would never move there.
