I was just as stunned recently when sitting with a 10 year old around 5:10 p.m. when she took note of a strong beam of light shining through a west facing window. "It's like it's almost day time!" she said with wonder.
A few minutes later the sun was more diffused. She said that the sun was gone.
I remarked, "Yes, it is almost sunset; soon it will be night."
She did not quite hear what I'd said, but was thinking, and asked me, "What do they call it when there is no light?"
"Night, night time," I answered.
"So it goes like this? First it is morning? And then it is afternoon? And then it is night?"
Ten years old. How in the world can this be new to her? When will she be able to either figure out or consider a deliberately offered explanation that the earth revolves around the sun?"There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

My daughter texted me from school yesterday. I'm at lunch and I overhear this girl: "Wait, Japan is a country? I thought it was a city," I'm surrounded by idiots.
Keep in mind my daughter is a senior in high school.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

It kind of makes you wonder what the school system is doing with the kids all day. They have them 5 days a week for 6 to 7 hours per day. What in the world are they teaching them during that time?Originally posted by disneysteve View PostMy daughter texted me from school yesterday. Not to knock you BJ, but your question is similar to "Wait, Japan is a country?". Our nation's education system isn't failing, it's already failed. There are some good pockets of education, but most of that closely follows high income. The rest of it? Red counties in red states refusing to put money into their educational infrastructure, meanwhile legislating for the right to teach creationism in parallel with their version of science. And then there are the relics of school districts where teachers simply show up to collect a paycheck. This has been going on for years. I realize my response is extremely pointed, but I also see those issues as being the crux of the problem.Originally posted by bjl584 View PostIt kind of makes you wonder what the school system is doing with the kids all day. I've had similar lunch time texts from my daughter...not everyday of course. I often think some kids are just not paying attention! I'm just glad it is not my kids.Originally posted by disneysteve View PostMy daughter texted me from school yesterday. I'm at lunch and I overhear this girl: "Wait, Japan is a country?
