    I don't know if there is a particular age, but adults need to take responsibility for these important documents. That means 21 years old!

      Give up on thinking MIL is ever going to surrender anything. Come up with workarounds so the MIL doesn't have to be involved.

      I would think that some things he could get without needing "mommy's" permission. When I got married I ordered a bunch (10?) certified copies of my birth certificate from the county where I was born because my mom couldn't find the original and I needed multiple copies for INS (what is now called Homeland Security) for DH's immigration, marriage license, etc, etc.

      There should be some paperwork he can fill out to report his passport as missing and get a new one.

      Leave her out of it and get on with your lives. Sorry you both have to deal with that degree of frustration.

        I have scanned copies of all these documents as protection. I think it comes down to how responsible your child is
