  • baby shower gift ideas needed

OK. I need a great idea or two for a baby shower gift for a baby girl. Here is the deal.

Mom is 18, dad is 19. They both just graduated from high school. They just got married. Pretty much dirt poor, but are both working min wage jobs. The state will pay their childcare.

They don't need anything at all for the baby. Seriously. Mom won a baby contest off the radio and got brand new EVERYTHING-including bed thata converts to a toddler then a twin, 2 carseats (parents each have a vehicle, but vehicles actually belong to their parents), stroller, dresser with changing table top, a years supply of diapers, bottles, warmer, diaper pail, clothing, toys.....literally she has it all. (the prize she won was a $1500 shopping trip to babies r us) In fact, she still has a store credit of several hundred dollars left to spend.

I am trying to find a gift that would be meaningful besides cash, yet still needed. I thought of a savings bond, but most likely mom and dad will cash it in, so may as well do cash. Plus, since they also get WIC and food stamps to help out, any cash or food items they receive at the shower HAS to be reported to the state, and will come out of their next months food stamps allowance (which is only $84)--EVEN if it is given for the baby in the babies name, since the baby will be a member of their househould...

One lady at church is a photographer and is giving them 3 photo shoots with packages.

I will add, these kids are really trying. They are not the party type, not smoking or drinking their money, thinking ahead (last weekend he built several raised garden beds - they plan to grow part of their food). They are renting a small 3 bedroom home, with a yard, thru an assisted rent program.

    Any ideas??

In addition I always give parents a hand crochet baby blanket (I usually make 1 a week) and a gift certificate for a free infant cpr class.

Books, instead of gifts a friend's sister asked everyone to bring a book to the baby shower. Books for kids are expensive, even used. And many people do not give them away because kids love them for years and are hand me downs from friends.

I have not spent much on diapers, wipes, bottles, clothes, but books I have spent a fortune. Both looking at used and new. It's hard to find and not worth buying used because of shipping online. Only if it's in a store do I buy it. When people ask what my kid needs I say books.

Sandra Boynton board books are great, dr suess, on the night you were born, cat a cupcake, and eric carle. At age 2 my DD is starting to read and can recognize letters from all the reading.

In case people suggest the library, I do use the library for books, we go 1-2/week and read and borrow. I do it for myself. But I specifically targeted those authors because they really grow with your kids and are age appropriate between 1-2. My DD first love truly is reading. And we read at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before bed, usually 1 hour in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon.

The research shows that just reading to your child 20 minutes a day sets them *FAR* ahead of their peers who's parents/family don't do that. Good for you!

A print rich environment and parents who read to their child interactively can be two wonderful gifts.

OP, gas gift cards to get to doctor's appointments might be good.

I would recommend books, too. I love the Mom's One Line a Day Journal, along with The Parent's Tao de Ching - and a series of sweet little books for the baby that the family will cherish. At my first child's birth, we received "Goodnight Moon," and "Guess How Much I Love You." So many great memories with these books, we'll have them forever. (The memories and the books!)

Hand me down clothes!!! Really I know she can go and buy clothes at Babies R Us, but that will eventually go bye bye. Round up boxes of clothes from people in the 12 month, 18 month, 2T and 3T sizes so when the baby out grows things and stuff starts getting harder at least the baby will have clothes. I would put in a plastic bucket, it's going to be sitting around for a while. I put the word out that I wanted hand me downs and I didn't have to but any clothes until my kids out grew the 2T size.

This baby must be at least 2-3 months old now. But a help-them-out, low key and non-reportable thing to give them would be laundry detergent. Not a fun thing, but tremendously useful. Maybe a clothesline and clothespins, too.

Hope this young family is doing well.

Baby girl was born at the end of March 2012, and has a baby brother on the way now. Family is doing well--mom is staying home.

Baby 1 is nursed, and she plans to also nurse baby 2--so they have not spent a single dollar on formula.

She is using the cloth diapers--the new kind where the diaper pad snaps into a wrap. Those she got with her shopping spree that she won (along with car seats, stroller, crib...). They had actually bought 2 car seats (one for each vehicle) but have since sold a vehicle so they would have no payments while she stayed home. So, they will not need another car seat. The seats are the type that will go rear or forward facing--so they are set with seats. The stroller she got was a twin stroller (thinking of her niece), so she is set stroller wise for baby 2. And, they had also gotten 2 cribs--one for use at Grandmas house. But, since Grandma is not babysitting, since mom is not working, that crib is coming back to their house for baby 2.

She does childcare from home 2 days a week, earning $100 a week. Of that, she has been putting $50 into a baby college fund and they use $50.

I'd say this young couple is on the right track. Nothing will be spent for the new baby except the deductible on the insurance.

They sound like sensible, capable people. Glad to hear things are going well for them.
