When should a women tell work she's not coming back?

I don't plan on working after the baby comes. I am not going to say no, because I could change my mind, but when do I need to tell my work?

My DH says not to tell them until I decide for sure.

Also I'm 17 weeks pregnant and haven't told them I'm pregnant yet. I'm not showing and no morning sickness, tiredness, so it's impossible to tell!

When should I even mention it?

Not sure when I'd tell. (I didn't have that problem - I was so sick everyone knew).

Most women don't tell (that they won't come back) until after the baby is born. Believe me - they won't expect you to come back. Most women don't (from my experience).

I definitely wouldn't tell them until you know for sure.

Do you get any benefits while on maternity leave? Would it be worth coming back to work for a month after...just to get those benefits?

I went back to work with both of my kids. I decided to quit when my youngest was 6 months old.

If you don't want to burn a bridge, I'd set a goal to tell them asap. There are more benefits to keeping the communication open with them, if you value the job. Good luck!

I would say as a professional courtesy, tell them as soon as you know for sure.

They will most likely need to fill your position, and some training may be needed, so I'm sure they'll appreciate the heads-up.

No bennies. My DH carries everything and makes the bulk of the money. I'm writing up my thesis, so I should be finding a new "job". Actually I've been looking and interviewing but not seriously. We postponed moving to the West Coast, where I was looking until next summer at the earliest.

I kinda feel like a slacker. I know I could go back to where I am and work but I don't really want to. I just want to chill with the baby until we figure out where we want to live and then look for a job more seriously.

In that case, give your employer as much notice as possible, once you feel confident you won't be returning. Good luck!!
