  • Is a 710 sq ft apartment big enough for a single male?

Help me design the apartment lol. I've always lived with other folks in houses, this is my first time being in an apartment alone.

    Dining room: 8' x 8'
    Bedroom: 12' x 10'
    Living room: 12' x 18'

Full size or queen size bed? I'm 5'9 - 5'10.

Would you get a sofa & love seat or sofa and recliner for the living room? Where would you put your computer...bedroom or living room? I guess I can get a TV stand that can hold both my flatscreen hd and my playstation 3. I'll have a directv box as well.

It didn't come with a microwave so I was thinking about getting both a microwave and a toaster oven and not use the regular oven so save an electricity(it's an all electric apartment, no gas). Good idea?

    Your thoughts?

It's plenty big! I lived in studio apartments until I got married.

As far as bed size, I suppose it depends on whether or not you plan on sleeping alone most nights.

They sell combination microwave / toaster ovens ... might want to look in to those to save counter space ... I've never had one, so can't recommend a specific model.

If you plan on getting married some day, I suggest you go for inexpensive (as in temporary) furniture, because no doubt your wife will have a thing or two to say about how your shared home will be furnished. How much seating you need depends on how often you plan to have other people over.

Personally, I don't care for electronic gear in the bedroom. I'd say keep that stuff in the living room (or even in the dining room, if you plan to be like many single folks and eat in the L/R or over the kitchen sink).

I lived with my DH and a dog in a 570 sq ft 1 bedroom condo for 3 years! 2 of us living there together. 700 sq ft sounded luxurious then!

We are a 5 person family living in a 1024 sq ft house. Over 700 sqft for just one person sounds fine to me.

Actually, it sounds lovely... Our house is a little crowded.

If that is not enough space for one person, who would it rent to? half a person?

Skooby, that size apartment is PERFECT for a single guy. Had I not gotten roommates, that's what I would have had. Roomy enough to be comfortable, but not unnecessarily large.

Bed--depends on your relationship plans. For example, if you're going to be getting married within the next few years, it might be worth getting a queen. Similarly, if you just like having a big bed, go for it.

Living room--I have a couch and recliner, and often have upwards of 8-10 people in the house, and it works fine. Admittedly, we have/are looking at getting a bit more seating in there, but for now, it works just fine and hasn't been a problem. Having barstools and regular chairs around helps as well.

Appliances--Totally agree. I rarely use the oven, because we use our toaster oven alot. Cooking for 1-3, we don't need that much cooking space normally, and it does use less electricity. The combination thing scfr mentioned would be cool, but look around at prices... It may just be cheaper to get the two separate.

Good luck with the apartment, moving in is a mess... hahaha

I have slept in a full sized bed with myself my husband and a toddler just fine, so I seen no reason to go bigger...except that I have a queen sized right now...but then we are both 6ft tall.

Regardless, you have nearly as much space as my family of 6 do. I think it is plenty of room.

I would recommend NOT buying everything right off the bat, you may find your opinions change after living in it for a time, so give yourself some time to experiment IMO.

I live with someone in an 800 sf little house and it feels pretty comfortable to me. In fact, I'm still trying to fill it up with furniture!

Don't go to a store to buy anything for your apartment...look on craigslist first.

I also don't like electronics in the bedroom. But here I am, renting a 8.5' x 12' room (...trailers for sale or rent...) for three nights a week with a tv and a computer at the foot of the bed AND living with an inside cat and dog (which if you have read some of my previous posts about indoor animals, you know is a grating situation).

I guess my point is, you can live with almost anything. 710 sounds good to me!

that's big enough! a small apartment is good for me. I bank the extra cash.
It also gives me the chance to create a nest egg for the future, pay off debt or save for an exciting vacation.

lol... i grew up in a 847 sq foot 2 bedroom, 1 bath house with my mom and dad. We did just fine. (They still live there now)

710 sq ft is plenty big enough for a single male.
