Please don't tell me I need a co-signer because that is out of the question... though I know it is preferable. I can probably wait an extra month and save up another $1,200

So my question to you is... "can I get a loan for about $3,000 any way with about $2,000 down?"
I don't know where you got the idea that having a co-signer is "preferable". It is definitely not. Except in pretty rare instances, nobody should ever co-sign a loan for another person.

If you can put $2,000 down, then go out today and buy a car for $2,000. Forget the loan entirely. Then keep on saving and when you can afford to, consider upgrading to a better car.

You may want to just wait it out and save up the total amount so you can pay cash for a car. I wouldn't get a cosigner either. The bank may or may not give you a loan. You can try, but with only 2 months worth of credit you may have a hard time securing financing. Paying cash for a car may make more sense if you can hold off a few more months.

I suggest you look for a credit union which you are eligible to join. Once you are a member, you can apply for a personal loan. Credit union policies vary, but you have a good chance. You probably won't be able to get a car loan, because they tend to only finance newer cars.

You might also consider just waiting a few months. If you can save $1200 per month, it won't be very long at all until you have 3k - 5k cash.
