Re: $160 an hour to shred cheese?

I can shred a block of cheese in my food processor in about 15 sec. Check you food processor. Many come with lid/cutting blade that fits on top of the container and you push the block through the tube and it is quickly shredded. Of course, then you have to clean the food processor afterward. But, if you want to do alot of cheese, is is quite simple.
I usually buy blocks of colby/jack cheese. It is very mild and versatile. The kids like it melted on just about anything. If I don't need alot, I just shred it with the hand tool.
But, I really don't see that shredded cheese is that much more per lb. than block cheese. And, if often goes on sale whereas the block doesn't seem to. So, I buy either depending on my time and what i need.

I don't have a food processor. Don't want to spend money on it.

I was really shocked to find shredded cheese cheaper than block; for regular cheddar. $1.80 versus $1.85. I like the shredded because I can spread it on a cookie sheet and freeze it. Normally I buy block-this was the first shredded I bought in years.

          Depends upon the cheese

We have Land of Lakes on sale this week, 8 oz. for $1.50, of course I have a $1 coupon, so I was shredding it up to freeze it today. Took a few minutes per block, but it's such soft cheese. Parmesan...slow.

I love the quality of Sargento, preshredded or sliced, but it's expensive. The Costco brand is around $6 for 5 pounds...but when it melts, you can see the oil puddles, poor quality. It's what I usually buy, but I'm rethinking the health issues if I can get sales/coupons. We use ALOT of cheese!

bleh... The Dollar Tree's shredded cheese is no good either. Doesn't melt good or anything. The only thing its good for is a quick strait from the fridge snack!

But shredded cheese is my weakness...i have to have it! yum!! I've always been able to find it cheaper than block cheese around here.

160/hour for the convenience of shredding cheese is insanity. a lot of times i buy block cheesed if it's going to be melted anyway since it's cheaper than the shredded

Gordon Food Service sells grated cheese sightly cheaper per pound than sliced or chunks. Perhaps this is because the mfr can use leftover bits for shredding?

i hate shredding cheese, but i'd rather shred my own cheese than buy a package of shredded cheese!

We buy a lot of cheese. I get the big bags of shredded cheese for 5.99. I don't know how many lbs that is but that usually does it for several pizzas and dinners.

Wow I saw this post of mine from 8 years ago. I picked up the same bag of shredded cheese yesterday and it was $9.79. It last us about 2-3 weeks

I can shred cheese pretty quickly, but even with that, it is often nice to just have a bag of shredded cheese on hand (especially with the blended cheeses). Also, some of the softer cheeses just don't shred very well. It is nice to have some on hand in case we want to trim some time out of the meal preparation after a busy day at work. Also, many food processors work well to shred cheese too as several of the comments indicate.

I think it's not possible. How come? This price is insane.

I always thought it was more practical to just shred the damn cheese yourself but my husband says he'd rather pay for the convenience. I still buy blocks and he buys shredded then I find out that shredded has more chemicals that I would rather not injest so I guess I'll just stick to the blocks and he can have his chemicals. I always wondering if maybe he can't taste the difference because he smokes...

For me it's not just the time it takes to physically shred the cheese, although I do have to take my time because as a massage therapist if I grate my knuckles that is no bueno. It's also the time it takes to wash the cheese grater since we don't have a dishwasher. And the more prep work I have to do the more dishes there are and there is only so much room in the drainer, so I may have to do two loads. Which means I have to dry and put away the first load. And there is the mess to clean up from the shreds of cheese always managing to wind up outside of the bowl. I can't use very much prepared or prepackaged food due to dietary restrictions, and cooking takes me long enough as it is. It's worth it to me to take shortcuts where I can.
