I've got just a balcony as a 'garden' for now. Nearly facing North so just a tiny bit of sun (until 11 AM in a 'barely' angle) but it's Texas sun and it seems to do the job.
What I've got in my balcony 'garden' is tomatoes (cherry and 'tiny tim' type cherry), jalapenos, thai peppers, ginger, basil, catnip, 'truly tiny' bananas, coffee plants (arabica), a lemon tree, an orange tree from scratch, an avocado grown from pit, and I guess that's about it. Oh and a few pineapples.

Tomatoes, onion and garlic are good choice. They don't occupy huge space.Since you are just starting a garden I suggests to start planting herbs.
