Isn't there a tag wrench that has to be used, I'm pretty sure my brother paid a lot more than $8

That's exactly what the Land Rover dealer told us on our Range Rover sport. "We have special tools".

I had it changed at Jiffy Lube last week for 40 bucks.

Not really...there are many "inexpensive" watches that self wind by the motion of your movement. Ive seen sub $200 diver watches that do this. Not at the same precision of a rolex but its not unique.

Correct. Many watches still have perpetual movements. Most of those movements are mass produced in Japan.

A TAG is more of a fashion piece, while a Rolex is a fashion AND time piece.

I moved my dad to assisted living 2 years ago, and took possession of his Rolex Submariner as I knew full well he would lose it with his Alzheimer's, get stolen, or both.

I proudly wear it every day and I think of my dad often when I look at the time. Of all his earthly possessions, this is the one I treasure most because he wore it every day and now I wear it every day. Hopefully my son will some day wear it every day.

It's nice to have that connection with your father.

This is where that generational thing comes in though. Will your son want to wear a big, expensive watch every day? I wouldn't. No way would I ever own or wear a watch worth thousands of dollars. I don't wear a watch at all at this point and haven't for years since getting my iPhone. I have a couple of nice ones that are special to me. They reside in my sock drawer in my bedroom dresser.

                * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
                * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

                  Only time will tell.

But quality never goes out of style .

Quality may not go out of style but times change, technology changes. Right now, as I type this message, I have 4 clocks within my line of sight. None are on my wrist. Every computer, phone, microwave, cable box, thermostat, alarm panel, car dash, and more have the time displayed. And on the occasions when I'm out and about somewhere, I've always got my phone.

I have numerous friends who wear a "watch" except it's an Apple watch or a FitBit type of device that displays the time.

I know I'm not Rolex's target market. I guess the luxury crowd will always go for the status items. I just don't see it personally.

I have a 200 year old, 9 foot Scottish tall case clock gracing my entry. Not a chance am I ditching it for a quartz model from JC Penney.

Of course not. Neither would I. But you also can't assume that your kid will have the same appreciation for that clock after you're gone. I've seen many cases of people leaving things to their kids and grandkids and the kids couldn't care less about the items even though they were valuable high quality things. If someone left my daughter a $10,000 watch, she'd have that thing on ebay before the ink was dry on the death certificate. I can guarantee that she'd rather have paid off student loans than a fancy watch she'd probably be afraid to wear.

nowadays watches are more of a fashion piece, like jewelry. to each his own though.

I never liked wearing watches because I used to hit them on doorways and otherwise scratch/damage them.

If my dad passed one down to me I'd definitely be sporting it

my wife is saying the same thing about bag collecting. a chanel bag has gone up in value at roughly the same rate in the last 20 years. she knows how to convince me to convert a want item to a need item.

Years ago I found a Watch magazine that looked interesting at a yard sale so brought it home for probably no more than a quarter. I was amazed while looking through it. Based on the prices of most of the watches in the magazine a Rolex is the equivilant of a Timex when it comes to expesive watches. Some that they featured were running at that point about $250K - Philippe Patek I think the brand was. Who could even feel safe walking around with $250K on their wrist???

If you want to invest in watches, be sure you know what you are doing and keep your eyes peeled for the ones that will really make you money!

The magazine was very educational and I sold it fairly quickly for $10.
