  • 2014 savings goal $15,000

    Hello everyone,

I am a student at the University of Central Florida.

Currently I have $4,000 saved while working as an intern for a finance firm here in Central Florida.

    My plan is:

Save $4,000 more at my current internship location
($1,000 in Jan, Feb, March, April)

Save $5,000 during my internship with a defence contractor in the summmer
    ($5,000 in May, June, July)

Save $2,000 during my last semester (August-December)
(Currently I do not have a job lined up, my goal during the first 6 months of 2014 is to reserve a internship for this time period)

***NOTE: I am proposing during the month of April, so I will need to obtain a second job soon. The ring that I am interested in, costs about $2,500.

    Total amount needed in 2014: $15,000 general savings + $2,500 Engagement Ring = $17,500!

    Current Savings: $4,000/17,500 (December 2013)

So does your current income allow you to save $1,250/month excluding savings needed for the ring purchase? Are you taking loans ot pay for your education? I guess I see where you have listed what you'd like to save during the remainder of your internship and for the summer but I guess my question is whether you've pulled these numbers from somewhere or its just a round number you'd like to aim for.

My current internship position pay about $1,600 a month. After $600 a month in expenses, I am able to save $1,000.

As for the summer, the expected income will be $2,800. The living arrangement will be completely covered with a stipend offered by the defence contractor.

My education is completely covered by Merit Bases Schlarships. So I will end up with ZERO student loan debt once i graduate in December 2014.

You seem to be a smart person who can get internships and job already lined up after graduation. Remember you can make money and save but you shouldn't have such a tight budget that you cannot enjoy your student years.

Congrats on going through school on scholarship and no loans! That's great. My daughter starts college this year. She will be getting a nice merit scholarship but not a free ride.

Clearly you've got a good head on your shoulders. It is great that you are already focused on your finances and saving. That will serve you very well in the future.

The one thing I can't help but wonder is about this:

Is this a ring you've picked out or one that she picked out?

          * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
          * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
          * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.
