Yes, doing things for other people and being helpful and kind are huge contributors to happiness. I'm not sure if that falls entirely under the definition of charity, but I guess we all have our personal definitions.
Giving to others and being altruistic will make you feel better. some say it is because your are releasing dopamine but I hate to trivialize the experience. It is not the dopamine that make you want to help others...this is the true source of what makes you feel this way. that urge to give of yourself. evolution cannot say anything of this. This is given from something far greater then ourselves and we should all listen in my opinion
