Same level? I would rank my dog higher than a lot of people ive come across...heck even some of the people who live in my apartment complex. At least my dog can serve a purpose. He sometimes goes to old people homes and people pet him...brings them joy. The people I see near where I live are absolute scum...no jobs...extremely disruptive with noise/music. And the best part of it is my taxes help them survive. If they disappear the world would be no better or no worse. They are a waste of space.

If you want a pet with a short term commitment, volunteer as a foster with a rescue organization. You can help mold an animal into a good pet for the right family and it's not a long term commitment.

You'd need to carry significant insurance to avoid getting sued if someone got bit or something else happened.

A similar concept already works in other countries. In Japan, there's cat/dog/owl/etc cafes. You basically pay a rate, maybe $15/hour or so, and play with whatever animal they have in the facility. No need to worry about feeding, cleaning up after them etc. There's 1-2 personnel on the premises to ensure that there's no problems between the animal and the "renter".

This could work in bigger markets like San Francisco, LA, NY or DC.
But what if they get attached with the pet ?

N.B. : If you want to do it by an ethical way you could like open an animal shelter (if you have a place) and you can adopt pets to rent them temporarily until they find a home. It's easy as piece of cake .
