  • Online Job Boards

Has anyone here actually gotten a good job via an online job board? For me, they were a monumental waste of time. The time would have been better spent networking.

I haven't applied for a job in years. But my friend is looking now. Should my advice stay the same... avoid online job boards and try to make real connections instead?

Waste of time might be a little harsh but you are correct that networking is a far superior method. The statistics show that only 15% of jobs are filled through online job boards. Over 70% are filled via networking. I wouldn't advise to completely ignore online job boards just to appropriate your resources accordingly.

So no sitting on job boards 8 hours/day neglecting all your contacts. Got it. Will pass along the info.

I stopped looking for regular jobs a long time ago. Not only are they boring, but they simply don't pay me enough. It wasn't until I went to business for myself that I made the real money!

FIREseeker, remind your friend that some kinds of jobs never appear on general job boards, but only on boards and publications that are viewed almost exclusively by people already in the profession, or closely related ones.

VinceMcMan, a good alternative if you can only get boring low-pay jobs is to work on yourself and your skills. Go back to school, take an apprenticeship in a skilled trade, work on your interpersonal skills even to the point of getting personal counseling if necessary.
