What is social marketing?

So, thanks to a lot of the opinions on this board, I have been checking out multi-level marketing companies with some skepticism. I was recently introduced to a company that does "social marketing" and the person says that this is completely different than MLM, but I can't seem to see the difference except that now some of the profits also go to help a social cause.

My question is, it social marketing completely different and change the company so it is no longer a MLM company, or is this just something that is put out there try to make MLMs look better. it's all rather confusing to me so I'm hoping that some here might be able to provide some clarity.

If they told you it's completely different, they are lying. Don't trust anything they say.

Social Marketing is a new buzz phrase where a portion of profits goes to help some social cause. Think Tom's Shoes. It has nothing to do with how the company is structured. A company can be a MLM and incorporate social marketing. In fact, more and more are doing so to make their systems seem more appealing.
