  • Storage Wars

You can attempt to make a profit from buying storage units that are up for bid or sale. You can then make money from selling the Items one by one. This is for people who know what they are doing and can find valuable items among the many worthless items. If you want to test your luck, try bidding on some storage units that people have not made payments on and are up for sale to the general public.

I watch some of these shows on TV and the thing that amazes me is that they actually find buyers for some of this stuff.
To bid 500 for a unit, and then try to sell the items 10 or 20 bucks at a time on CL or EBAY is very time consuming and in my opinion not worth it...unless of course I found some rare painting worth millions....

Most of those guys have thrift shops and don't have to actively go out and sell most of the common items. They just spend their time selling the rare items and let the people come to them for the common furniture, dvd's etc...

I think most of the show is fake, they always find something in the back of the storage locker and is worth a ton of money??

Also, there is 20 other people standing around and only the shows cast is bidding, that seems strange to me

i'd call it gambling rather than any kind of investment, it really is a gamble with what you cant see in there. with these auction shows popping up like crazy there are a lot of novice buyers now. i was just at my coin shop the other day and a guy comes in with some coins to sell from a locker, i followed him out to see what else he had and bought a bunch of stuff off him for a great price.

It is indeed a gamble. But for all we know there are people who are lucky to gamble. But I would say, it's not my thing.

Yes, those "storage wars" celebrities make most of their money through the TV show, not the storage units themselves.

I realize this is an old thread but since it got brought up again....

I don't think the show is fake. I just think it is very deliberately edited. They're not going to show the lockers won by people other than the stars. You do occasionally see someone else bidding but I think they edit out most of that.

And they don't always find a gem hiding in the locker. Sometimes they lose money.

As someone who has bought and sold collectibles for 30 years, what annoys me about the show is that it makes it all look too easy. After buying a locker, the winner goes through it and throws out numbers for what everything is worth. That's all very nice but there is no guarantee that he will actually realize those prices. And no mention is made of the hundreds of hours of time spent transporting, cleaning, researching, pricing, photographing, listing and shipping the items. I'm sure the stores these guys run have rent and utilities and employees to pay so they don't net nearly as much as the estimates shown on the screen. People really need to understand that.

I think you need a lot of experience to buy and sell the contents of storage units. Plus you need a large overhead in terms of a warehouse and a location where you can sell your purchases.
