  • teaching to earn more money

My brother in law teaches classes on the side. He is an IT man. In the evenings and on Saturdays he teaches classes on using the computer, powerpoint, excell and such. People come and bring their own laptops. He uses the community room which charges him $35. Each class is $20 and he usually has 4-8 students each time.

    I like this idea.

Here, our community college lets the general public design and teach a large number of evening and weekends non-credit classes. It includes things like how to start a small business, architecture of the downtown area, how to select the best printer for your needs, car maintenance, conversational Japanese, Photoshop for high school yearbook staff, Ubuntu for the previously Window-ed, aquatic exercise, jazz dance for adults, trigonometry for radio buffs, applique` techniques, DIY auto body work, glass bead making, how to keep chickens in your back yard, etc.

Some cool stuff in a low pressure atmosphere. Anyone can propose to teach a class. Instructors are paid based on the number of students, I think. Classes are inexpensive to take, too. Some may be one day only. Some several days or weeks. Some may be a whole semester.

Our synagogue does something similar. Many adult ed classes are taught by congregants with a particular knowledge or expertise in a certain area. The deal is that the registration fees comprise the teacher's salary. If there isn't a certain minimum number of people, the class doesn't happen (unless the person teaching is willing to accept the lower amount). Since we started doing that, we've had a much broader range of class offerings and a wider variety of people teaching.
