Sell your books online challenge!

My wife is a member of a Dave Ramsey chat group. One of the recent threads was a challenge to list 30 books on Amazon.com and see what you can get rid of. The proceeds will be used to put towards the debt snowball...

She listed 30 books two days ago, and we have already sold two of them... The money we make off of this wont be huge, but every little bit counts! Also, I think I'm hooked on Amazon.com now.

For us, this was an easy thing to take part in. We love books, so we have a lot of fuel to throw on the fire...

Just to update, since starting we have made about $30 from selling 5 or 6 books and a video game!

You have been bitten buy the "selling stuff online" bug. I won't lie when I started with cell phones have the fun was just checking the updates. I would go on just to see if there were bids or any action. It's exciting plus it actually makes you money. Win Win in my book

Cash4books and powells

Try Cash4books .com and Powells .com. You put in the book's ISBN number and they tell your right away how much (if anything) they'll pay for it. They also pay for shipping. I've used both several times with no problems...

I've bought books on half.com before. One thing I've noticed is that books depreciate faster than pretty much anything on the planet. New updated versions of text books come out constantly, and that makes the older version essentially worthless. $100 new, $7.50 plus shipping used. Don't get me wrong, usually when a new version of a book comes out the changes are nearly undetectable, so you can pick up the older versions of of a text book and get by just fine for a class. I mean, math doesn't change much. 2 plus 2 is always 4. The only thing that will change is a few of the pictures and page numbers. I got by all the way through Grad school on used outdated textbooks and did just fine. But, don't expect to make much money selling books. If nothing else, it's a good way to get rid of them and declutter a bit.

Much like you, I caught the Amazon.com bug. After some time however, I realized that all the efforts of selling were only rewarding for a select number of books.... the rest of them it was much easier to just use a website like bookscouter.com to find out where it's being bought back and then sell it back and be done with it. Burn out on Amazon is high.

I second Amazon. Have sold two DVDs there -- one almost immediately and the second took about a month. They have a high commission rate though but can take care of shipping, customer service and warranties if you ship your product to them.
