  • What's the silliest thing you've ever done for a buck?

My friends and I were just talking about some of the silly things we did in college for extra money and I was curious what the weirdest job or gig you've done to make extra money.

For me it would probably the summer that I dumpster dived for beer bottles to recycle. Since I lived in a college apartment complex, Saturday and Saturday afternoons were a great time to collect bottles. I could make $100 in a couple of hours!

Well, I haven't done anything extreme for this one yet. But I did try out a few strange jobs for this one before.

When I worked at Barnes and Noble they offered me a $10.00 gift card to dress up in a Raggedy Anne costume for the children story time meet and greet. Though I was an hourly employee at the time the gift card did buy me a few lunches. It was hard to move around though, it was a costume that had one of those over sized heads so I needed someone to lead me around and had to turn sideways to go through doors. I laugh about it now, plus it is a good example of a time I went above and beyond for a company.

I like the beer idea too, we did that for a while when we always had a ton of people over, cases of empty beer bottles were stacked to the ceiling but we could never find a recycling plant that would give us money for them. I found out later that not all states do.

Ate a june bug (a stink bug outside the south I believe) for $100 when I was a kid. Drunk relatives + 4th of july + offering 100 bucks to a kid = worth it.

I had not try working on something silly, yet if given a chance I would gladly take the challenge! It would be a good experience!

When I was little (maybe 5 or 6) and learning to ski for the first time, I was heading up the bunny hill on a T-bar and I spotted a quarter that someone had dropped along the way. When I was directly over it I intentionally fell over in order to pick it up.

The T-bar system came to a halt along with everyone else using it, and the operator ran over to make sure I was ok. I still remember him saying "He found a quarter" and laughing his ass off, but I didn't care. I had just found a free 1-play at the video arcade!

I bought a u-haul trailer full of old computers once to resell. Yes I did end up making something off of it...but it took too much time and effort, and I eventually had to donate most to Goodwill and Salvation Army. People would expect hours of tech support for a <$100 computer; not gonna happen (well, it did...but I wasn't happy about it).

I got a HUGE projection TV that was broken, off of Craigslist thinking I could fix it. I spent 70 bucks on parts and many hours in the back of that thing soldering on new circuits, etc... I ended up selling it for 100. So essentially I made 30 bucks for all the time and frustration I spent on it.

Needless to say, I haven't bought any broken electronics to fix for profit since, lol...

i remember in high school, wanted to see a concert really bad so me and a buddy raided the newspaper
recycling bins at the YMCA. he filled his '65 mustang and i filled a '72 road runner full. newspapers were
everywhere but the drivers seat. i think we got around $60 for the haul, plenty enough to buy tickets, i think we ended up seeing 3 or 4 concerts for free
retired in 2009 at the age of 39 with less than 300K total net worth
