  • Metal Detecting

So thinking of buying a metal detector so I can go out on days off when the wife is working to look for coins, rings, gold, etc

Not a guaranteed money maker as have to factor in cost of equipment, fuel for travel, etc but it is more to get me out of the house and hopefully make some profit

Any one done this and able to offer any advice on what to buy?

I know that people have found things and made a lot of money from this.

I think what you need to do is find a metal detector that has a very long range
as I have heard that the deeper you can go the better, also a lot of the valuable
things have already been found close to the surface, but with the newer more powerful
metal detectors you can find things that previously were not found.

      Hope this helps

I saw a guy doing this today, in Chicago, along the lakefront. Mid 20's out with gusting winds and a bit of blowing precipitation; made me think he was either crazy or must make good money doing it.

Dang! from you name I thought you were from the UK - they have history back 2000 years that a metal detector could really help with but since you seem to be Californian, maybe not so much of 'mother load' find.
A quick google on "metal detector reviews" seems to point in the right direction. Find historical maps of your local area and use that as a guide to where to look, depending on what you want to find.

            Hi All,

I have also seen people using metal detectors on beaches, I suppose they are looking for
            money that people have dropped.

But you are right if you live in a country where there have been old settlements then you can find things of historic value.
