Need more info. How old are you? Married? Do you have emergency savings? Does your company offer a retirement plan with a company match? For what purpose are you investing - short term, intermediate term, long term?

Stock mutual funds will probably return 7 to 8% (annually on average, which could mean big losses on occasion) over the next ~20 years. The beginner, such as yourself, should select no load, low cost mutual index funds (e.g., Vangard.com) and dollar cost average (invest regular amounts each month) your investments. It is also a good idea to have a portion of your investment in bond or real estate mutual funds (e.g., 20 to 40%) and rebalance the mix once or twice a year and after large changes in the stock market (20% or more up or down). There is additional info. on the Vanguard website.
