Refereeing a sport is a great way to make some money. Local soccer, football, basketball, and baseball associations are always taking referees. Usually it involves taking a class and passing a test, buying the uniform and gear, then you're sent some low level assignments. I've refereed since age 12, and am starting to do upper level men's league games. On Saturdays and Sundays I make easily $100 a day, plus during high school soccer season in the spring there's tons of games to go around.

I agree its especially great for kids. My girls starting refing community soccer games at 12 making $8/game. Doesn't sound like a lot but over the course of a season it adds up. My DD14 started umping rec softball and did spring season and fall ball around her high school sports seasons. Since softball had some sunday games she got 6 games this fall and made over $200. Its great that the girls have their own money for their own activities!!
Oh and our church bulletin had a blurb about needing ref's for cyo basketball. So that's an option too for this time of year.

I agree, i have been playing basketball for a long time. And their are many players in yet only few referees, so when theirs a league they always get the same referees to officiate while some players cant play because there are already many players.
Many leagues means much money for the referees. You only work for an hour or two.

I advocate doing this as well. If you are over 18 the money is higher (more than the $200/day posted above).
Most U17 and U18 youth soccer games pay about $40 for the center and $20 for the lines. If you find a tournament (which means games from 7am to 7pm) you could easily do 4-5 centers and 4-5 lines during the day.
If you find a premier league that pay doubles or triples (I know some leagues here which pay $100 for centers and $50 for lines). If you are serious and good at it, you can easily make serious money on weekends. Plus food is covered for tournaments.

I did this right after I got out of college (ref soccer). Adult leagues would pay $50 for the center and $35 for the lines for a 90 minute match. Youth games up to 12 YOs average about 60 minutes and those would pay $35 per match. I can't think of many other part time jobs that would pay $25-$35 an hour PLUS you get to pick how much you work plus you get exercise plus you get to do something you love (hopefully) plus you get to give people a fun environment.
I still do it, but less now since I got into coaching soccer. But I remember those days of being 22, being out in the sun for a few hours having fun reffing. Walking away with $85–$100 in cash which would be my spending money for the week. It was great.
