  • Self Serve Sales

Everything can be sold. Or, at least you can TRY to sell just about anything.

Have an apple tree with apples that otherwise go to waste? Old shoes? Even old socks?

Look around. Old pens? Sheets of paper? Manure? Veggies?

Now, much of this stuff you don't want to sit there and put on a sales presentation. It wouldn't be worth the time. And, it might be embarassing to give a spiel about the coziness of your old boxer briefs.

BUT... what if you put it in a box and set it on a table by the curb. Then you put a steel box there with a sign: "Place money here."

Every now and then go check the box for cash.

To deal with those who don't have exact change, list even prices and say "Feel free to round down, if you don't have enough. Or, add something of value to make up the difference."

Also, have a sign with: "Have something you want sold? Email ---. I will sell it here, taking 50% of the proceeds."

    "Tell a friend!"

Don't worry about thieves. I have done had self serve sales many times and have never seen any evidence of theft. Not that it can't happen but you'll probably come out ahead, anyway. To reduce the odds, set up fake video surveillance (get an old video camera at a thrift shop, etc.). Or, keep your dog outside!

You might want to tie in with a charity and say "X% goes to XYZ Charity!"

I'm interested. You do this where you live? In what kind of housing in what kind of neighborhood? Do you get foot traffic, bikers, motorized traffic? How do you secure that steel box? Please give us some examples of what you personally have sold this way.

On my block we have an occasional give-away spot. People just put things on the end of the middle parkway strip with a sign, "free, please take." This is done in the rear alley, too.
