Sell Unwanted/Unused Items

I live in a masterplanned community. Someone here started a group for our community on Yahoo groups. It has turned into a great resource for all kinds of community information, practical information, (like recommendations for service oriented businesses, like HVAC issues, roofs, etc.) and also a forum to have a "virtual garage sale".

If you live in a community with a name, be it a subdivision, apt complex, master planned, your local town, check out Yahoo groups to see if anyone has started a group there. If there isn't already a group, consider starting one. It may take a while for the word to get out, but once it becomes established, it's such a great resource. Also, if you live near a community that is more likely to have a group, look for theirs.

I'm clearing out items that I have been keeping in the hopes that they might be useful someday. They haven't been useful for over 3 years, so I figure, they aren't worth the space in my house.

While you may not get a huge income, you can definitely put the money towards another goal. I'm hoping to fund Christmas this year with the results of my house clearance.

That is a great idea and way to be connected. I bet it leads to more people meeting one another and building better community connections.

It definitely does. It makes it easier to find people with like interests/needs. I just posted the idea for a coupon train yesterday. We can actually do it without having to use the mail! I posted it really late but I already had one taker!

I have sold many of my unused items on Ebay. There is no shortage of people who buy stuff on Ebay.

Thats a great idea its also a good way to organize multi family garage sales. I still really like craigslist for selling stuff especially furniture. Collectibles and more rare items seem to work better on ebay.

Although I should add that it can make for an awkward transaction if you aren't shipping the item and you are meeting in person

I sold many useless christmas presents this year. Can't tell you the junk people had given me as give.

You have to weigh up the ease of sending something you are selling, especially a large item, to someone close-by, compared to the more money you might get for the item on eBay. There's also deliver fees that might eat into your profit.

Personally I use eBay for most items and local tools like Gumtree (which I imagine is similar to the local area Yahoo Groups) for when I want to give things away for free, like furniture that's too old to sell and too tricky to package.

Yep, eBay is really good for things that ship easily. I sold a little glass ornament thingy on there and the fellow who bought it swore it would break, but I swaddled that thing in bubblewrap and everything I could find and it made it through the mail. But I really like the idea of having a group to do this locally. Better than Craig's list if the people are truly neighbors, because you're less apt to get the um, interesting, people who sometimes want to come take a look at things, LOL! But I've had lots of luck with Craig's list too. There's Freecycle, also, for things that you can't sell but don't want to just throw away, if you have a group in your city.

agree with Msi above: i left my apartment to go travelling and could only take onebig rucksack: all the 'stuff' we feel we can't live with out had to go,a nd guess what, it actually helped me become less attached to 'stuff' going forward. If you dont use something, or wear something , get rid

I live in a community with one of these groups, as well. It's a great place to get to know people I wouldn't have otherwise, and there's always some good deals to be had - especially furniture and baby items.
