Keep It Simple for Yourself
Hello. Whatever you decide to do, it needs to be simple for you. That could be a list of expenses on a yellow notepad. Or it could be a detailed budget like mint.com. It absolutely needs to be a system that works for you!
I suggest first you determine how much of an emergency fund do you need to be comfortable in case your car needs a repair, etc. $500? $1000? $1500? Get that money set aside in a bank account ASAP.
As you're saving this money, get your budget in order. Sounds like you don't have an income issue, but a spending issue. Somehow you need to be able to stop the impulse spending, or at least reduce it to the amount you're allowing for in your budget.
Do you have a family member or friend who can help you be accountable to your budget? A coach can help you get to where you want to go with your financial behavior.
