  • Need some inspiration please!

    Hello.
I need a pledge, a cheer...some thing that says " I can do this! I am stronger than this. I control my money, my money does not control me. Eyes on the prize baby."

I am telling myself that I must do what I know I must do...not what I want to do. Why is it that the RIGHT thing to do is always the hardest. Is this what makes us responsible, wise...successful?

I want to take this money and build a garage. We really need it! I know that I must take this money and pay off the credit cards. The garage is old and has issues, but it will make it another year. My husband has his heart set on building the garage...but everything is telling me we should wait until next year. He will fight me tooth and nail to build the garage now...because now is more gratifying than later...I must be strong and lead him to the path of financial fitness...*Sigh*
Please help me stay strong. I could use all of the encouragement I can get.

    Thanks, Sarah

You know, I had a house that needed a new roof -- not a desparate situation, no leaking, but needed a new roof. Then, there was a hail storm. Now, rarely is a hail storm considered a blessing, but with full replacement coverage this one was. Maybe waiting for the true right time will give time for a blessing in your life. If it doesn't, you'll still be better able to build it right (without the debt!)

Yes we would be better able to build it but we are actually taking a few risks by waiting. Our garage is uninsurable (a hazard as far as the ins co put it) so all of hubby's expensive tools and things would not be covered if something happened. The garage is blocking a monsterous pine tree that just started leaning over at the top this year. If it goes...it's landing on one or more of the 4 houses in it's path. It's too dangerous to scale the tree with a man and the boom trucks can't reach it as it is between the house and garage with houses running on all other sides.
Could these things make it another year? Probably, but what if...this is so frustrating.
Now I am starting to sway like we really need to do this now because what if that tree doesn't make it another year? I have homeowner's ins but there are children in those homes! It's negligence on my part to know that my tree is leaning and not do anything. Think 80 year old pine tree here. It could do so much damage and hurt someone very easily if it falls. I can have a special crew come in and remove it without the boom but it will cost such big bucks that we may as well have torn the garage down.
Keep in mind I am being extremely pessimistic. The tree just started leaning and is not leaning that bad, but just enough to worry me about the weight of the snow and ice on the branchs this winter.

The huge grins you will have after paying off the debt will be wide enough to shelter a fleet of vehicles.

        Or, more seriously:

Once the debt is paid off, you will be able to gratify without guilt, and that's worth waiting for, because it is rare and special.

OK, I talked to hubby and he reluctantly has agreed to wait on the garage! He assured me that the tree would be fine until then.
          Yeah!

The delayed gratification will make it so much sweeter when you get there.

If the tree goes down Id rather it take out the old garage than a new one!

Cant you get one of those storage sheds at Home Depot for a couple hundred to store his most expensive tools?

If no one can take the tree down except the wind, Id wait for that to happen. Whats the point of building something new if its just going to be destroyed later?

              Good luck!!

The good feeling of having a new garage would only last a little while. If you have struggled with debt for as long as I have, I can't imagine the feeling of being debt free would leave very soon. If it were me, everytime I looked at the new garage I would be reminded of my debt load.

                    Re: Need some inspiration please!

What causes more sleepless nights, the rundown garage and the leaning tree or the newly created debt?

The tree will not fall on the new garage because it will be removed when you decide to build.

The garage will be useless when your husband has to sell his tools to pay off the debts when he loses his job.

Insure the tools by getting a Rottweiler on a 25 lb chain tied to the tree not the garage...lol

Seriously, life is about choices and how you handle them. Build a new garage and you have no choice, but pay off the debt. Don't build the garage and you have made your choice to protect your tools poorly. Odds are the tools will be fine. Your choice is made from where I am sitting.
